rc10 6010 bomb blast

did you ever get something off ebay, and after you win the auction you say, why did i get that? well, i believe i was distraught after missing out on melvin's worlds car, so for some reason, i got this. it is a somewhat built 6010 kit. nothing missing from the box. only problem, is the guy painted the chassis, nose plate, shock towers, and motor plate. all of the parts, except the body mounts, are dyed red. i think i got it for a good price, being what the tires and shocks go for, alone.

this should be a fun build, i think. stay tuned.............

There's got to be a way to get that paint off the chassis without hurting the annodized finish.

Brake fluid is great for taking paint off, I wonder if it could do the job and leave the original finish unharmed.

well, before and after. a little discoloration on the tub, but most of it will get covered.

you could strip off the anodizing and polish it. that may look kinda neat with the red.

i did think about doing that before it got here. i wanted to see how the paint came off first. i just gotta figure out what direction i want to go with it. i have some nip white parts to replace some of the red stuff, but not all of them. i'll figure something out.

Awesome job sr8p. What did you end up using to get the paint off without hurting the finish?

I'd leave it as is. I have yet to see a gold tub with a perfect unflawed finish. Well, except Alex's that he's re-annodized.

Also remember, you can always re-dye darker. I know most old-schoolers shy away from black because it's still available, but to be honest I really don't remember very many people back in the day leaving their parts white. At least at my track. Black was seen as much cooler than white parts back then. It's probably why AE went to black to begin with, and discontinued the white. Black and gold is a hard color combo to top.

itell ya what, the guy did a nice job dying the parts. they all match. he dyed EVERYTHING, except the shock towers.

the one problem is that the front end was bolted on, and the car must have been sitting near a window, or something, in a garage, maybe? anyway, all the front end parts have died off. they kinda look pink. the axles, tie rods, and ball ends are all corroded. i was thinking of trying to re-dye the front end parts, but i don't want them to not match, and to do all of it black, i think they might look a little brown. i could be wrong. it's funny, he even dyed the zippy ties and antenna tube.

oh, and on the painted parts, i used some paint reducer from my work. it only took about 15-20 minutes.

i've re-dyed alot of icky colored parts black, and they always turn out black. just leave them in for awhile. (for black, i boil for about 3-4 minutes and then turn the burner off and let the parts sit till the water cools.)

if you try re-dying red, take the parts out when they are still a little brighter shade then you want. when the parts cool the dye tends to get darker.

i got some black dye last week for some parts on my tekin car, so i'll throw a few red pieces in with them and see what happens.

Black is black... it covers EVERYTHING.

FWIW, I did a Custom Works sprint car in red a few years ago, and quite by accident, I found a fantastic way to get a beautiful bright red dye. We used to use RIT red and it would get dark and look funky. When I did the sprint car, I was trying for a bright orange, and using a powdered dye from another company, I mixed raw magenta (like a hot raspberry) and bright lemon yellow. I used too much of the magenta and the color turned out bright candy electric red. I had never seen a nylon dye like that before. Worked awesome.

BTW, I know that Castrol Super Clean will strip chrome and paint off of things with a little less toxidity and harmful breathables than thinners. A gallon of that stuff goes a long way.

i picked up a few more new white parts. i still don't have everything i need, but i'm getting closer. i picked up a real nice novak 4 of ebay a couple days ago. i have a g-plug receiver already, i still got to find a servo, though.

just an update. i was working on it a little tonight, and thought i'd take a pic. i got everything i need for it now, except the bearing adapters for the trans, an antenna mount, and the original ball cups. i guess i'll need servo mounts too, but i don't think this is getting a radio system.

FINALLY, i can update this build.....................

it took sooooo long to find all of the parts i needed to replace all of the dyed parts. i still need to find an antenna mount, but one will come around sometime. and also a new or mint futaba 132 g-plug servo.

sorry for the pic quality. i must have changed the settings or something.
