help id this lazer, zxr?

hi all, this is my first post on the site so please be gentle! ive been looking for a vintage lazer zx-r to restore for a long time, ive been offered this ropey old thing, advertised as a zx-r but im not so sure, i wondered if you can help identify exactly what it is? the pictures show the wrong front shocks, but gold shocks are included with it, the main bit for me is the top deck and belt cover, ive never seen a lazer zx-r with this, only think i could find was an optima with a similar thing. anyhow any light you may be able to shed on it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome -
Based on the turnbuckles, shock towers and steering plate, It could be a ZX-R with a ZX topdeck and belt protection.

Based on the wing mount, top deck and battery mounts, It could be a ZX upgraded to ZX-R spec.

Either way, I´d take it just for the slipper

The car is ZX upgraded the MK2 front shock tower, MK1 rear shock tower, Team lline knuckle hub, losi front shock and special clutch

thanks for the help guys, i think ill give it a miss then! does anyone know of anyone selling a zx-r? if so let me know..

Its close enough to zxr that you could make it R spec quite cheap and easy. Thats an awsome lazer with the slipper clutch,, never seen that before. I recommend you GRAB IT. Seriously,, if restoring a zxr,, your gonna need parts anyway. There are some really cool hop ups on that. The slipper, front tower, front c hubs... very cool lazer which as mentioned earlier,, could be a zxr with parts, or a zx with parts. If I had the chance, and price was reasonable,, Id get it,,, but then I tend to buy 4 or 5 of everything....

Definitely a nice candidate for a restoration. If you do pick it up, once you have access to the BST section, there will be plenty of people here that can help you with the parts.

A ZX that has been updated over time,more common than completely original examples. It wouldn't have started as a ZX-R as no one would "update" the chassis by replacing the one piece top deck with the split top deck and centre spine that isn't as stiff. The slipper clutch is supplied buy Wasp, they also sold a range of ring spur gears so you could change gearing without touching the slipper at all.

Hard to tell but it looks like it has ball diffs fitted, no sign of grub screws in the diff outputs. In which case to convert it to a standard ZX-R it would need a ZX-R top deck, slipper and wing mount.

To convert it to a ZX-R Mk2 would need ZX-RR upper kingpins, top deck, chassis, motor mount, gearbox side brace, rear top deck mount, rear hub extension plates. Most of this is due to the batteries being moved back in the chassis, which moves the rear deck mount in front of the motor rearwards, so everything attached to it has been updated.

cheers for the help guys, i really appreciate it. i may wait till i can access the buy and trade section then post a wanted add for a zx-r. i think dedp down id always have a nagging feeling its not a throughbread zxr! in the meantime if anyone knows of one for sale please get in touch.

Piecing together a ZX-R might be easier than picking up a complete one, especially since piecing one together will get you much-needed spares...and cool hop-ups (such as the ones this one has).
