New project "Superbeast"

Post by Steve71 »

I can't believe I am starting another project, and I still have to finish my clod tuber lol. That one will be done soon though. Calling this one "Superbeast" because that is what I named my (real 1:1) 69 GTO drag car years ago because I always loved that Rob Zombie song. Anyway...I did not plan on doing another project but I was at a really great local rc shop the other day, and happen to come across the Jconcepts 66 Chevy II Nova body. I don't know if you guys have seen that body in person but it is really huge. It's 20" long and a full 11" wide. I kept looking at that body and trying to come up with a reason to buy it and put it to use lol. Then it hit me. How cool would it be to do a truly hardcore monster truck like Jim Koehler's 57 Chevy but only using the 66 Chevy II Nova body, so I bought the body :)

My plans for this truck are to build something really wicked. I love my Clodbusters, and my King Sling clod with the beefed up Thundertech axles and metal gears and all is tough, but I want this one to be nearly bulletproof. So I just tonight ordered a brand new set of RC4WD Digger axles, as well as a SCS Monster drop trans. The axles are all CNC'd aluminum, and use HPI 1/8 scale diffs and hardend cvd's and are 13" wide stud to stud. And the trans is all CNC'd and just looks like a work of art. I don't even want to talk about how much the axles & trans set me back #-o

Plans are to build a full on monster truck tube chassis for this one with around a 16"-16.5" wheelbase, solid bars for the 4 link like I did on my other truck, probably going to go with some Savage shocks for this one, and 5700k Castle brushless with Mamba x esc. Then the 66 Chevy II Nova body but heavily modified wheel opening and trimmed up front & rear.

I'll start posting up pics as parts get here and I get started on this one.

It's like Christmas morning here today. Postman dropped off my axles and trans. I'm not gonna lie, when I ordered these axles/trans the price was a hard pill to swallow. Now that I have them in hand and see exactly how beefy they are and the great quality of them, it's quite a bit easier to handle the price tag now. These things are just unreal can't wait to get started on the chassis so I can get them underneath it. Gonna prob be a couple weeks till I can start though, bit too much real work in the way for a bit.

DO I have too? Axles and trans shipped to my door was $520. I think the axles before tax and shipping were $360 for the pair.

It's more than I wanted to spend, because I'm far from a "well off" person that's for sure. But with this truck this will probably be my last build for a long time because I just decided to build this as bulletproof as can be. My other trucks use clod axles which I really like, and I have all the good stuff in them like Thundertech CVD's and straight axles, and all the good stuff, but you can only build up clod axles to a certain point. So I figured if I build this one to be as tough as can be, even though it'll cost more to build it will save me down the road from broken parts or having to build another truck. Or at least that's my reasoning I keep telling myself

Kickin it old school tonight. Never was any good with "sketch up" or any of those cad programs online. So doing it by hand. Starting to lay out the design for the two main frame rails for the new tube chassis build. The long extended rails on the rear will end up bent upward to work as a wheelie bar built into the rear of the frame. Planning on using some hard nylon on on the underside of that so it slides easy when it wheelies on concrete and doesn't wear the frame, yet the nylon will be able to be replaced as it wears out.

Didn't have a lot of time after getting done with "real work" tonight, but did manage to squeeze in a couple hours of fun work and at least get the main rails of the new tuber chassis about half way brazed up.

Still a long ways to go, but got a few more hours over the past couple nights in on the new project. Would have got more done but can't seem to find my flat stock to finish the trans mounts. I want to get those done before doing anymore of the upper cage. So everything is on hold till I hit Lowes for the 4th time this week lol.. and it's only Tuesday.

Looks great Steve.
A '66 Chevy II was my very first car. Had it two weeks, let my cousin drive and she totaled it.

Since I finally got caught up with orders for work I was able to spend the morning working on the chassis again. Starting to show some shape of a truck now finally. Probably on hold till at least Monday now as I have a buddy from Florida in town and visiting this weekend.
