Aluminium parts : removing anodisation and powdercoating

Post by utieh »

I d like for a new project to have polished alunimium parts on my RC10 ( front plate, motor plate )
those parts came anodised or powdercoated.

What tool should I use to remove the powdercoating and to polish the plates, I only own a cheap Dremel.
I know that i must use ovencleaner to remove anodisation but I will have to polish it after too.

Thanks a lot.

you can polish with a dremel, but you might "cut" the metal and create warps and indents, its a timely process too. i recommend this buffer from harbor freight for $50. I recommend some 500-1200 grit sandpaper too from harborfrieght (its cheap) to sand those really tough anodized peices that wont remove even with yellow easy off over cleaner

i use the same one, buffing wheels and compound are cheap and sold at harbor freight. The machine doesnt have a lot of "torque", but for buffing aluminum you shouldnt need it, works perfect and ive polished all my aluminum with it..

for a dremel, pick up some of these from ebay, DONT blow money on dremel branded ones cause the price will bankrupt you

Thanks a lot, it helped a lot, I think I will go for the Dremel even if they are tiny, I already have one which is not in a really good condition but I ll make some tests.
Thanks again :)

loctite gasket remover (in the spray can) for removing powdercoat. i've read that a good paint stripper will work too.

i ve just removed the powdercoating with some sand paper, I think it was just paint actually cos the previous owner didn t strip the anodising before painting it.
I ll by oven cleaner tomorrow to remove the anodizing and then will polish the parts

Thanks again for your help
