Gearing Down a Brushless motor!!!!

Okie, I have a 17.5 motor and a 5.5 motor, both Novak Brushless, the guys at RCHR are running 8.5 and 10.5, I know if I use the 5.5 it'll be too much to handle on the track on a 2wd T4.

Can the 5.5 be geared down? Enough to compare to atleast an 8.5?? or should I just go with the 17.5 and gear up??

Will gearing down hurt the motor?? I had the 5.5 on my t3 and it was a handful in an open field, imagine how crazy it would be on at dirt track

Depending on the battery you're putting to it, 5.5 seems a little much for a 2WD off road vehicle. I would imagine you could dial down the torque curve on your ESC a lot if it allows you to do it.

Just go for it!! It will be like a bigblock in a pinto she can take it!! just dial down the finger a little nothing like a little power on demand

My main fear is the durability of the diff with the 5.5, I melted the diff in my T3 with the same 5.5 system, It basically grounded the diff balls into the diff gear's plastic, when I took the diff apart, there were no balls at all there.

I'll put it on, run it a couple of laps in practice, if I don't feel confident about it, I'll just go with the 17.5 and gear that high

This is what I was running in it with a lipo and never did anything to it untill I put it up for the winter and then sold it to you. it could of used a little grease but it still looked new when I broke it down? its never had anything but a brushless in it. I never broke a part with it. but one shock cap was cracked new in the box thats why the blue ones. at least 10.5

I just installed the Airtronics Hi Speed and Hi Torque Servo, Novak Receiver, new Jconcept rear double dees, Integy Blue Aluminum Servo Mount, Duratrax Aluminum Servo Arm. and added some graphics onto the body.

I'll be installing the GTB w/ 17.5 tomorrow and I'm racing it Saturday. I got the 78 spur and someone already suggested 26-30 pinion, I'll be playing with that on Saturday

I guess I'll try to sell the 5.5 to a 4wd buggy guy and then save to get the 10.5

It was a hand full with the 10.5 I just used 1/4 throttle all the way arround then full down the straight that was something to hold on to. really testing the glue on the rear tires

I put on the 17.5 on there, and set everything up, EPA,EXP all that stuff, not I gotta get to the track and try this bad boy out.

I'll only be using the 17.5 for one week, I sold some stuff on ebay, and I'll be buying the 10.5 soon, YAY!!!

for the 17.5 it should be geared around 6 to 1 ratio. start with a 34/78 you may need to do some dremel work to get it to fit. the 5.5 should be geared 12.5 to 1 ratio so 18/87 would be a good start.

the 10.5 is a very good choice in truck and should be geared 9.5 to 1 ratio so start around24/87 or 21/78

You dont say if you are running LiPo or NiMh cells but...

There is a local guy over here in OZ that regularly runs a 3.5 or 4.5 motor in his B4, but he also only uses 4 or 5 cells depending on the track conditions..

Just a thought..
