Original Xbox and the new 360

Post by Halgar »

Question for anyone who's got both the original and the 360 Xbox consoles. I need new controllers for my original console, are the plugs into the machine OR the break-away in the cord compatible between the old and new controllers?

How well do the wireless controllers work, and is the part that plugs into the console interchangeable between the old and new consoles?

Yes, it's still here I dust it off ever once in a while. I've had some wicked games on that machine.

Uh, you can keep the tape drives, it's not like anyone's ever gonna get the data off of one anyway! LOL My first experience on a computer was the Commodore PET in high school. These monochrome beauties had tape drives that would arbitrarily save your data. By arbitrarily I mean that you were lucky to be able to save your work at the end of the class period, let alone retrieve it the next time you were in the lab to continue working.

So back to the topic, how many wires/pins do the new controllers have against the old?

Original = propritary connector which can be wired for USB
360 = USB input I believe.

I have a wireless setup and have never seen a 360 wired controller.

I have a 360 (wrapped for a Christmas gift for the oldest boy) and the OG xbox also. They do have wired controllers for the 360, but I wont know compatibility until after the holidays..

We found some after market controllers. We've not had good luck with them in the past, hopefully these will be better.

I should have read that better.

Can you not find "original" controllers on the bay or a used video game store? Or is it that you want wireless ones for the original xbox? The original wireless were crap as they were third party. They did in fact eat batteries like crazy.

The break away cords (without jumper section) will not plug into the console from what I remember.

The 360 wireless are all internal - there are no adapters to plug into the console. So they will not work with the xbox.

I won't buy used controllers, I know how most game addicts treat their stuff. Back when I first got my xbox, maybe 7 years ago, I also got some MadCatz controllers. The Madcatz didn't last even half as long as the OEM controllers. Now that MacroSux doesn't make the original box anymore, there's no more OEM support. About a year ago I was able to find a NIB controller, now not much out there and I won't shop at SleazeBay anymore.

I know the break-away won't plug directly into the machine, I was hoping that the new controllers had the same break-away as the old ones, thus solving the compatibility issue with the business end.

We found some after market controllers at Amazon that we're going to try. If they work out ok, we'll order up a couple more sets before there is no such thing anymore. My console is about ready to give up the ghost (it growls quite loudly upon start up ), but we've still got a NIB console of my girlfriends, less the controllers that we've already taken from it.

Even if they aren't beaten and broken, they have a finite lifespan. Mine are never miss treated, they're just used so much that they wear out and die. Right now my biggest problem is that I can't turn to the right, ok it will turn, but at less than half speed. The left turn works just fine, but you can't quite play the game only turning to the left, now can you?  BTW, this is my second console, the first one started malfunctioning at the end of year 2. The first two weeks I had the first one it was never turned off, spent a few of those days playing 24 hours straight. Note to self, man cannot live on Halo and adult beverages alone!

I remember when I bought H2, I paid an extra few bucks for the Limited edition which came with a background dvd of the game development and other stuff, an aluminum clad case, and a halo watch. I seem to remember some other trinket as well. What I can tell you is that I put the watch and other trinket up on SleazeBay and the proceeds nearly paid for the cost of the whole 9 yards. Basically, I got the game for free.
