Have done many like this on my nitros too. The extra weight of the motor made for an ass slapper on any jumps so the lengths definitely ran over the 5/8" mark like in Jeff's manual picture.

The dark around the edges where the tire bead seats are probably from the oils in the rubber. Maybe some simple green soaking could help it. As far as the norm goes though is to send them on down the road and new ones in order. Miss the days when these were plentiful and flippers weren't so rampant....
