TRX Tranny Into Tamiya King Cab
TRX Tranny Into Tamiya King Cab
I have a Tamiya King Cab that I use as a runner every now and then, but on the last outing it stripped the splines on the wheel hex and axle. For a fix I drilled and tapped a 3mm hole thru the hex and axle, this held up for awhile until eventually the axle finally broke.
The limited availability and price of the original replacement parts forced me to think of another fix, so I looked at mounting a traxxas VXL tranny. I already had a Integy aluminum Traxxas gear case so I used that as it's more compact then the plastic original. I also had some other parts for this swap kicking around, so I wan't out much more money then it would have cost to replace the original Tamiya parts, and replacing any future broken parts will be a lot cheaper and easier to find.
I want to get another set of A-arms as I fudged these ones up a bit, I didn't get the holes drilled for the rear carriers just right which resulted in too much toe-in, but it's a cheap & easy fix.
Here's where I'm at with it now.

Re: TRX Tranny Into Tamiya King Cab
That looks incredible, and as far as I know you're the only one to attempt this with those parts so far. But its a little bit too much cutting for my liking. How are you going to mount the top of the trans to the bottom of the tub? I'm currently (slowly) putting a Stealth trans in mine and i've found that it fits like a glove and requires no cutting to the King Cab at all. It looks like though you're trying to put a whole new back half in yours.
Somebody should make different plates to be able to mount different transmissions. They would probably sell like hot cakes...
or maybe not.

Thanks, I'll update with pics of securing the tranny to the top of the chassis. I'm pretty happy with it so far, considering everything I've changed so far, it still looks like a King Cab and not a total hack job.
Re: TRX Tranny Into Tamiya King Cab
Nice job. I like it the extra shock clearance around the camber link and the addition of toe in. What arms are you using on the back?
Re: TRX Tranny Into Tamiya King Cab
Thanks!
The rear arms are from a Traxxas Rustler, of course they were too long so I drilled new holes for the rear carriers and cut off the excess.
