A $3 roll pin punch

Post by SteveK »

How the heck did I last 20 years in this hobby without one of these?

Every hardware store I've been to this weekend has them. I start the pins with a larger nail countersinking punch (the cheap ones from Lowe's), then switch to the 1/16" roll pin punch when it's down to the surface.

I V-block made from hardwood from the hobby shop will probably work better than an open vise, like in the manual, but that's been working OK so far.

I have scratched so many shafts and axles using pliers to get these things out. Since I was replacing the topshaft with an RPM kit anyway, I just ground the ends off of one of the used Stealth's I bought last summer. The remaining portion of the pin came out in 5 seconds today.

Now I can replace all those pins I have squeezed so much that they just slip in without any friction.
