Proud dad here
My son and his pinewood racer took home the fastest car in the Cub Scout group and the fastest car overall for the event. Can't help myself, I just had to share...

Re: Proud dad here
Congrats on that one aeiou
That will stick with him for awhile and it looks by the gleam in his eye that he has an R/C addiction in his future as well

Re: Proud dad here
So what speed tricks did you employ? Polished axles? Weights on the back end? Gum on the opponents side of the track ...
Congrats on the wins.

Congrats on the wins.

Re: Proud dad here
That's awesome, congratulations!
Na, that seems unlikely. When I was a kid I took second place in my first pine wood derby and first place the second year I entered. Look at me now, no r/c addiction at all.

Congrats!
I miss doing that with my son. (He's aged out of Cub Scouts)
The Warthog also won Best in Show & 1st place in his group last year.
Here's a pic of a few of his entries:

Re: Proud dad here
Thanks, guys.
Congrats to you and your son, Diggley. Those are some nice looking cars. He’s quite the skilled modeler.
As far as the R/C addiction goes, I think it’s too late. He drank the cool-aid some time ago. But unlike me, he has a sponsor (or am I an enabler?).
For speed, he used the normal "tricks" - polished axles, balanced wheels and a goodly amount of that magic black powder. The weights were mostly in the rear and he chose a CG in just the right place. The shape had a lot to do with it too, I’m sure. Everything he used is allowed in his pack.
Last year, he got best in show for his pickup truck design, but it wasn’t all that fast – and he wasn’t happy about it at all. He was bound and determined to go for speed this time around.
2009 Best in Show

It wouldn't be a good 10Talk post without some build picks, right?:
Getting it smooth

Laying on the color

Lining up the wheels

Making it roll

5oz - perfect!

A final dose of speed lube before heading to the race

Seems like there's always 1 kid that brings the brick with wheels (the blue one with flames)
