New Guy Needs Some Help.

I am new to RC building, but I have drove a lot. My dad was big into RC back in the day, and he has recently gotten out of it. However, instead of him selling off his stuff, he kept it, and eventually he gave it to me, when he seen I was into RC. I only own a Traxxas Stampede, But I drove most of his stuff back when it ran when I was littler.

What I need help with is my RC10 Gold Pan. I do not know what modifications my dad has done to it, or even what is stock and what is not.

Right now it rolls, but not too well. The problem is that one of the front wheels has been ripped right on the edge or the tread and the sidewall. It holds up right now, but it doesn't once I put what I have for electronics in it (servo and receiver). I do not know how to modify it, because I do not know if it has been modified already. I am not going to use a stock body right off the bat, so If i have to make it a bit wider, It really don't matter, as long as the outsides of the tires end up even. I plan on using one of the truck bodies he has, or a corvette body. I might eventually buy a replacement stock, but for now I am trying to get it to run.

Also, for the speed controller and motor, I am planning on using one of the several motors he has, and getting an ESC. He has a lot of 37 turn motors, so I plan on using one of those. For the ESC, I was looking at the DuraTrax IntelliSpeed Auto-Sport Forward/Reverse ESC. Is this any good, and is there anyway I can change the plug style? He has Litespeeds on all most all the batteries, and he said back in the day they were better than Tamiya.

Most of what I need will be just temporary for now, since I have a lot more to get running, and don't want to break the bank on this one just yet. I know the upgrade so I can use modern tires will most likely be permanent, but everything else that I have to add will most likely be replaced by something better.

I just took 3 with my phone, since I have it rolling, and I have two from wen I was setting bodies on it to see how they would fit. The front bumper in the pics has holes cut so it'll fit other bodies, so I am assuming he didn't keep it as a buggy. Also, if it helps with wheels, the fronts say "Schumacher Reg Des 2002375" and the rear say "Kyosho sand super 340/30/20.m"

Man, that will clean up very nice. I would tare it down, redye the parts, clean and whiten those wheels, and put the el camino cover on it.

Download the manual from rc10.com (Associated's web site) and look it over to get an understanding of the car. There are a few screws missing from what I can see, but everything else seems to look pretty good...

I have the original manual for it, I just don't know which one it is. I have one for a RC10 from 1984 (the copyright year is 1984 anyways), and then one says something about the stealth transmission, and there is another one, but I forgot what it says. I'll have to look at them tomorrow. I found the best screws in a box that my dad had, and I used those. there was a ball stud where the servo would connect, but I'm thinking with the servo I'm going to use that it wouldn't work, so I took it out. Like I said though, the one front tire is damaged, so I can't use it. If i could get a new tire I would, but I don't know what to get.

you have the 6 gear transmission. Go by the manual you have from 1984.

Like TC said, just take it apart and keep a good count, and control (Baggies) of all the parts. I see that a few traxxas turnbuckles and Traxxas "Hinge pins" have been installed. Once you go through it, just double check the parts with the manual, and if you have a question, post a pic of what you are having trouble with and someone here will be sure to help out.

The ESC you are looking at should be just fine, you would need to re-solder a new connector on if its not the same as the ones on the motor and battery. Just check the motors before you decide to run them for dirt / damage inside. Most motors can be cleaned out with special motor cleaner that you can find at the hobby shop for about $5. Just be careful, not to get any on yourself or in your eyes!

But like stated before if you need any help - let someone on here know and they will get you on the right track.

Those look like original 3piece front rims? - not sure you'll find tires except on ebay...the manual may say what diameter/width they are or somebody on the forums may know what tires would fit them and where to find them.

However on the front you can pretty much get any front wheel tire combo (probably be cheaper to get new ones anyway than to try and get vintage stuff) the only difference is you may have to get different bearings. I have set of RC10B4 discs (2.2") for mine on the original axles - all I had to do to mount them is change the bearings (3/16" x 3/8" - I think - unflanged but I think flanged work too). Avidrc.com has cheap bearings.

Also search the forums there are a couple of builds with parts lists/numbers that are great reference when trying to find replacement / upgrade parts.

I'm not going to do a pure restoration right now on it, I just want to get it running, play with it for a bit, then start on the next one. Most everything was already there, I just put the steering linkages together. The bottom is very scratched, so I might just leave it how it is.

Does anyone know what the original tire size is. I found some tires on eBay, they say they will fit, but I want to make sure. They say they are 1.9" tires. I might just get new wheels and bearings, so I can run new stuff.

Yes, my dad gave me all his stuff. It was just packed away down in his basement. I know there are a few custom ones he made, at least one other RC10, and a few trucks, like the Traxxas Hawk, E-maxx and Nitro Rustler. There is a Tamiya Hornet and a Clodbuster too. Most everything he had is torn apart completely, so I'm going to rebuild them one at a time to a running condition from the most complete to least. Next is the Haw, then the Hornet. I could get the Nitro Rustler and E-maxx running fairly quickly, but the cost is just too high for me right now while I have others I can work on. He swapped bodies back and forth from his vehicles too, so I'll eventually, once I get some running, get some bodies that look as original as possible.

Since I will be using a truck body for it, is there anyway I can put full width 2.2 wheels on this, but still keep the offset of the wheels the same? basically make it into an RC10T while modernizing it??

The B4 fronts are pretty cheap I think $4-5 for the rims and like $10-12 for the ribbed tires (though I think any slim 2.2 tires will fit). Bearings run you another $7 (shipped).

As for the truck I am running rc10T3 rims (see my avatar) all around - check out rc10.com for the part numbers - they require 3/16" axles on the rear (or you have to drill the holes out) - originals are 1/4". Again rc10.com has the part numbers for the axles and rims. To run the big rims/tires on the front you'll need a decent servo.

Fronts are 1.9" and the original rears 1.6" (you have the RC10CE ones not the Originals on the rear)
