Nope its not 18-105mm

Here is a sample shot of my D90 using 12-24mm
Scenery shot during our short vacation in Maldive's Halaveli Resort.

F2.8 or F4? Either is expensive! Very nice!

All I can afford is a 50mm 1.8 D (cheapest). Thank God for the built-in AF motor on the D7000. :P

As a extreme data point, I have Canon 10D that I have owned since new in 1999. I have over 1,000,000 shutter activiations (not kidding) and it's still going strong...... now, does it need to be re-calibrated, YES. I am just too lazy and cheap to send it to Canon for a rework.

To each his own and I have never used any Nikon product, not that I am against them, just never had the opp..... but I am happy with my 15 years of Canon products (note my previous post about activiations). I've had a film Rebel, A2, 10D digital, now 1D MarkIII. So far I am happy with 1D.

Lense wise, you can't go wrong with the 18-55, I think you pretty much can do it all with that lense (relative to for your intended use). If you step it up a notch relative to action photography and have the budget, any of the 70-200 2.8s are a do it all sports lense. I've had my 70-200 as long as I've had my 10D and it's still going strong (though I need to get it serviced as well).

But (yeah, this is bragging a bit), there is nothing like shooting with BIG GLASS, like the 400 2.8 or the 600 4. Amazing products that make it so easy on the photog. The only problem, they cost as much as a inexpensive car.

Just got back from the first family vacation with the Nikon D7000 at the ready. Was very happy with the speed during water slide action shots of the kids and I plan to do some cropping and fiddling with the kid beach shots I took. I mostly used aperture priority mode but also fiddled with some other things. Even with 39 AF points on this thing it still got confused a few times though. The 2 memory cards came in handy when I quickly filled up the first shooting burst trying to get my 2 year old to cooperate on the beach.

I really need a speedlight external flash to finish the rig though as nighttime shots were not great.

Among the resort set, I saw mostly Canon but some Nikon. As someone who considered a high-ish end SLR purchase for over a year, and had no brand loyalty, I chose Nikon because of reputation from both brothers in law who shoot a lot (one with a pro body and 2.8 big glass zoom for ice hockey pictures). They told me to observe what pro's shoot with as well and I kept a mental note of that, too.

One suggestion, be careful with the AP setting as priority. In low light settings make sure you dont dip below 90, or at a minimum of 60 TV, unless you have an uber steady hand. My rule of thumb is nothing under 90 unless I am going for some crazy slow panning shots. I typically use TV just to make sure I don't get into blurry trouble. Noting wrong with using AV priority, but make sure you are aware of the resultant TV.

I've had a Nikon d50 for years, bought it when the d60 came out, and it has served me very well... They're up to d1,000,000,000,000,001 right now, but the d50 has been more than sufficient for all of my photography needs, and I have shot weddings, with high praises...

After a while, it is all the same camera with new window dressing...

Hoping for an answer w/o doing a bunch of searching the web or joining a camera forum(in case anyone is wondering why I came in here to ask this). Will the Canon lenses that I have for my Rebel 35mm work on other brands or just Canon? Also, is there any way of knowing whether or not they will work on a digital body w/o actually testing it before I buy?

In my experience, just Canon works with Canon. If you visit a site like B&H photo, it should tell you what models work with what models. Worst case, talk to someone on the other end versus just relying what's on the web.

Thanks for the info. I think just taking them where I plan to buy from and testing them would be my wisest choice.

OK, the Wilson rig is complete. I got a decent deal on a lightly used Nikon Speedlight SB-700 on craigslist today. Included a pic of the setup.

I wanted the speedlight (aka external flash) to shoot at my son's 6th birthday party next weekend so now I'm all set. He's getting a new bike with gears since he's graduated to the next level in that respect, and the party itself has 12 other 6-year-old boys coming. Party will be in a rented community center gym, so it should be action packed!

OK wait... if the camera is in the picture then how'd you take the picture in the first place?? Are you a robot or something!?

Sorry everybody, I'll just shut up now.

LOL, suckass iphone camera. But good question!

On a tangent, speaking of cameras and spending money, if you're a Nikon fan, check out the craigslist pricing of the Nikon F5. Yes that's the top of the line pro film camera from a few years ago. Yes, film is dead, but how can you pass up a camera built to withstand a nuclear blast (practically) for $300 used? Jeez, I'll pick up some film and shoot with that every so often just to enjoy the vintage feel.

That's kind of why I like the idea of getting a Canon body. I can keep my 35mm Rebel just because. I had looked at selling the body, but you might as well give it away. I'd rather keep it just for nostalgia in 30 years.

And yes I was going to say "selling my body" instead of "selling the body", but I'm too tired to make a joke about a statement like that. :P

I'm liking the Canon Rebel T3i. I'm going to go see if my nice lenses work with it... at some point
