Brushed motor with broken brush

So I was testing some vintage electronics tonight, and noticed that the brushed motor I had seemed to run at full throttle just fine if I increased the throttle slowly, but not if increased quickly. Most of the time. Sometimes it just worked fine.

I checked the brushes and discovered one was not moving smoothly. Turns out it was broken in half. What can cause that? Can I just replace the brushes with fresh ones, or is the broken brush a symptom of more damage to the motor? The collector seems a bit dirty.

Take the springs off holding the brushes in pull the brushes out inspect the comm if no scarring just clean it out and use comm stick on the comm and replace brushes.More than likely it had taken a direct hit on the motors endbell .If brushes are really discolored maybe it was geared wrong an overheated the brushes which causes them to deteriorate.DON

brushes are brittle, so a hard hit in the right spot can chip or crack them. just replace and check for smooth movement in the brush hoods and keep an eye on it.

Okay, thanks. The comm doesn't look too good, so I swapped the motor for another one.
