binding in transmission (6 gear)

Post by DMAT »

so this is more of an after the thought question on an issue i had.

so after doing some high speed runs with my car. the rear end started to bind up really bad. became hard to turn. since it still turned and i didnt feel any grinding, i thought it was the bearings. well, ive now replaced the bearings and changed out the felt gasket for the 3/8 x 5/8 bearings.

When i disassembled the gears, I noticed that the idler and output drive gear was having trouble turning but i couldnt figure out why. The inside edge of the teeth were grinded down some but i didnt see any broken teeth or parts floating in the tranny.

after cleaning and reassembly, im noticing that if the idler and output drive are aligned at certain points, they dont want to turn. I'm also seeing a general resistance to turning in the tranny now. I'm going to remove the 3/8 x 5/8 bearing on the outside and see if that helps since my outdrives are a little warped. As to the gears im not sure. Is there any common problem associated with this?

on a side note, ive got some metal idlers on order for the 6 gear so i dont chew up the rest of my plastic idlers. Any recommendation for the tools to deburr the gears. I've heard of an odd technique using toothpaste but im leery of its effectivness.

if the trans has ball bearings on the outdrives, did you put two inside the outdrives? if not, it's possible it can slide around and rub against the inside of the case. the stock bushing is double width to account for that, when you replace it, you need a flanged and unflanged bearing together.

all bearings were exact replacements. the damage to the gear happened before the bearings were replaced too.

well this has now turned into trying to make the tranny have a little friction as possible. i've removed the bearings, cleaned out the gears of which i found some slivers of gears caught in the outdrive teeth so the issue with the outdrives and idler is gone. i pulled the bearings, one of them had an indention in them and i could feel it grinding so back to felt.

now im at the dog bones. I had a universal adapter kit and swapped it out for the dogbones so i could run a 3/16 axle. Now im seeing the binding coming from the axles where the dogbones connect. So now im trying to figure out something better.

I know i can get a cvd kit. the mip 1007 kit for the rc10 is still available, my question is it still using the 1/4" axles or the 3/16" axles? if 1/4" is there another kit that has 3/16" axles that i can swap into it?

any suggestions on the matter?
