870c runner build

Post by variant45 »

I picked this car up recently, it's in very good condition. A prior owner dyed the wheels, servo saver, rod ends and some other misc. parts purple..... I don't like that and will be replacing those as I go along.

I plan to run Lipos and power a Reedy motor with a Novak 410-M5.

First job was to figure out how to secure the saddle packs. I decided to make new posts to begin with. Used black acetal and turned them on my lathe. Here they are before I cleaned them up..

Since this is a runner I decided to put on modern shocks. (the ones on it need a rebuild anyway). I had these Schumacher shocks and they are very nearly the same length as the original ones from the 870c. To make them work I had to make new bushings so they would fit on the Yokomo bolt at the top and I used Traxxas rod ends to replace the Schumacher cups so the bottom could be mounted on the swingarm.

So that's it for now... tomorrow I will finish the parts to replace the original front shocks and mount the Schumachers up front and work on the electronics...

The elcectronics are a Novak 410-M5, KoPropos 1001 FET servo, and airtronics receiver.

Here's the painted body that came with it. The undertray and wing are unpainted.

Been on the lookout for white parts to replace the purple rod ends and such. The rod ends were pretty easy to find but the previous owner also dyed the belt tensioner arm and tensioner wheel purple. I haven't found those used so I decided to take a crack at making them with CAD and trying shapeways. Ordered the wheel and arm tonight and will see how they work out. I copied the tensioner wheel exactly but shapeways has a .7mm minimum wall thickness limit, so I had to slightly change the dimension of the hub on which the belt rides, it should work fine.

I also have been thinking about a solution to keep the LiPo saddle packs from sliding around. One of these (maybe two) will be mounted on the bottom of each pack and they will slot into the battery cutouts on the 870C chassis.

Received some jconcepts wheels in the mail today and mounted some Barcodes.

Also, been experimenting with nylon on my new 3d printer and made some nuts for the shocks.

I have been experimenting printing with ABS and nylon and also, the Shapeways version of the belt tension arm arrived yesterday.

From top to bottom:

original Yokomo parts
Shapeways
ABS
nylon

I continue to develop the 870c runner. Enjoyed driving it around my yard tonight. The lipo and the Mr. L really make it go.

Bought some Team Suzuki hubs from a forum member and made my up a wrench for them today with the 3D printer....

I can't find these wheels. Are they still available?
