Hi Steve!
Any chance you found the exact box art car used in the photoshoot?? Just curious if its still around? I know the body still is minus the wing.
Thanks!!

Re: If you could ask Gene Hustings...
I have 2 questions I hoped you could answer:
1) which cars was gene racing before the scratch-build "rc100" he ran even before joining AE?
2) What was behind the radical design change betwwen the original 6-gear and stealth transmission?
(Let me explain: beside the obvious totally different mechanical set-up, the stealth housing is a total different styling than any of the other ae parts. Was this maybe the first product designed on a cad system? Or was it changes in the toolmaking industry that allowed more complex shaping?)
With much respect, erik

I believe Curtis Husting has that car. And yes, it is minus the wing.Wyattriot77 wrote:Hi Steve!

Biggest mistake in the RC-10, or with the Associated company all together. It's fairly open question.
(probably too far off topic for "I married the wrong girl", or "I wish I punched that guy sooner")
Thanks again!
"Is there another direction you wished you could have made regarding the RC10? Any mistakes you would have like to fix? "
I did not design the RC10.
Roger designed the RC10 car.
All I did was to help Roger in understanding, the differences between
1/8 gas on road cars, and 1/10 electric off road cars, by taking Roger to a real 1 to 1,
scale Off Road EXPO, where we talked to the builders of those real off road
cars, to find out what they were trying to design, for racing on dirt.
Once you understand the basics, of trying to race on dirt, then it's a whole
lot easier to design a 1/10 scale model off road racer.
I was busy updating our RC500 2wd car, into a new RC500 4wd car,
at that time, so I didn't have time to do it.
Roger designed the PERFECT 1/10 Off Road Car at that time!!

Gene Husting answers:
1. My very first RC 1/8 gas car was a DELTA car, which I won a number of club races with it.
Then I scratch built an RC100 prototype, which I raced and won our Summer and
Winter Champs Series with it.
2. At this point in time, R/C Car Off Road racing had become quite big. Roger
suggested that he needed help in designing these cars. As luck would have it,
in talking with Jamin Jay Halsey, he said I should talk to his Buddy, Cliff Lett
about going to Associated to head up a new Design Dept.
So I asked Cliff, and he said he needed a little time to think about it,
but a couple weeks later, after we had worked out the details, he became our
R&D Dept. head, along with Roger helping him, with these new CAD computers.
Roger was a wizard on the computer.

Re: If you could ask Gene Hustings...
1) my bad, I thought this prototype was the rc10 prototype and got renamed for rc100 to rc10. I guess the question should really have gone to Roger from the rply just above.
2) I knew something must have changed when the stealth came on
so both new designers and new tools.
Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions,
erik

Re: If you could ask Gene Hustings...
I wrote earlier that I would take pictures of Gene's two Stealth cars. I'll be doing that this morning. Sorry for the delay. Masami, the driver of one of the cars, had the car in his possession for a photo shoot in Japan. The buggy has returned and is now waiting. I'll post a link to the photos in the Reader's RC10 section like I did the photos of the very first RC10 in Gene's possession.

The photos will be 1000px wide, so you should be able to download them for whatever purpose you need [yes, I know you are kidding]. They'll go up Monday.Asso_man! wrote:Hey Steve, I would also need the Stealth for a photo shoot, please send it to the following address:

1] with the mini icons of r/c mania going on , have you thought about bring out a mini original rc10?
2] why didnt you jump on the 4x4 band wagon in the 80's when that class took off?

Re: If you could ask Gene Hustings...
1) Gene is no longer at Associated, so this question is not pertinent.CM_113 wrote:1] with the mini icons of r/c mania going on , have you thought about bring out a mini original rc10?

2) Gene's answer:
I didn't believe in trying to start new classes.
I always waited, while other people made their own new class
type race car. But, I did follow what was happening, and then when
it looked like it was going to grow, that's when we started to
make our own Associated type car, to fit that class.
It worked for me.

Re: If you could ask Gene Hustings...
Hi Steve. I have just found this thread and read it entirely. Thank you to you and your father for taking the time to answer all the questions and share the history. Since most of the major questions have been answered, I would like to know one little thing. Who chose gold as the anodizing color, and if there was any particular reason for it (maketing etc.), or just a personal prefference?
Thanks again!
