What year is this Checkpoint motor ?

Post by GeneralZod »

I want to use this old Checkpoint motor in another build and was wondering about what year these were released. It was modded with a Lemans aluminum end bell and is a 18x2 wind. I kinda like the matching gold label and endbell. Very smooth runner after a good cleaning and a well balanced arm even though the comm could use a few passes on a lathe.

Not sure if such motor is all Checkpoint made. I know Le Mans endbell could fit Yokomo can. But I don´t think Jim Greenemeyer made such mixes. Also Checkpoint modified engines were known using modular endbell what means slot brushes.
It would be interesting to see if there is a Checkpoint armature inside. If not, maybe just the sticker is Checkpoint.
Yokomo based Checkpoint Modifieds are very rare and usually came with a black can like this https://classicrc.wordpress.com/motors/checkpoint/checkpoint-yokomo/

Here is a photo of the arm during the cutting process. The arm my have ran with the original end bell and small brushes in the past judging by the size of the wear on the com. I am no expert on older checkpoints so any info you provide is appreciated! I suspect it is the original arm but not 100% sure.

Yes it seems small brushes have been used at some point.
For the armature it could be a Checkpoint. It seems there have been differences between Igarashi based and Yokomo based motors or others.
Usually you can see Checkpoint armatures painted in red color but I think this was maybe more for Igarashi armatures or early armatures.

For your armature I can see two signs of proof for an original armature.
One is the balancing holes, these had been all over the place found at a lot of other modified motors. For Checkpoint they should be centered or very close to centered.
Most motors also used solder joints for connecting wires to the commutator. Very few motor builders welded the wires to the commutator.
You could find this at Checkpoint and Team Losi motors. But the interesting fact is, their motor builder was working for Checkpoint before...
So yes your armature should be Checkpoint.

Glad I could help out. Love those Checkpoint motors. :D

Your Checkpoint Yokomo motor looks great and is very rare. But if it's me I would replace the endbell with a correct Yokomo endbell, even when I like that Le Mans.
But if you do go with the Gen I version without heatsink.
I think I have seen a Bolink modular endbell at Ebay what would be the most perfect choice, because it's the same as used with the original motor. But might be not that cheap.

BTW regarding Checkpoint https://classicrc.wordpress.com/motors/checkpoint-2/
