2wd Rear wheel wobble fix

Post by PhilV »

So I've been working on my Bandit, and one thing that really bugged me was how sloppy it was. I was able to shim out most of the suspension slop, but one area that I just couldn't tighten up was the rear wheels. There was too much play between the bearing face and the pin and the stub axle face. I thought I could throw in some teflon washers, but there was still excessive slop. So today I started taking measurements and trying different combinations of things to see if I could take make it better, and just for the heck of it, I threw in a 5x8 bushing from the front steering posts. This bushing fit between the two 5x11 bearings in a Traxxas rear hub and added .005" From .407" to .412" I'ts not much I know, but with two teflon washers that measure .020", one on the inside and one on the outside of the rear hub, I was able to eliminate virtually all excessive movement. I am using modified clamping associated 12mm hexes too, so that is part of it, since the hex goes over the pin and just slightly past the pin, right up to the washer, and no more slop.
BTW, I used another Associated part for the front live axles. Part # 71111 They are T6 front axles that have the 12mm hex built in. The only thing I had to do was buy 5x11x3mm bearings and a short 3mm button head screw for the back to secure it. Don't have to mess with losing axle pins or 12mm hexes or even clamping hexes. And there are others ones that have different width's so you can adjust the width a bit too depending on which ones you buy.

I've used Pro SC10 front axles with Traxxas carriers before. The fit is much better.

No need for the thinner 3mm bearing? That’s good to know. I’ll look into those too.
I’m wondering if aftermarket rear hubs eliminate some rear slip too? RPM rear stub axle carriers sort of state that they make their carriers with a tighter fit. I might have to try those too sometime.

I actually used some small 3X5mm shims to slightly extend the axles and set endplay.

I also have slop in the rear hubs of my Radicator Experts. I was planning to use flanged bearings on the inner side to tighten things up. Still have to order those though.
