Kyosho TF 2 Drifter Rear Wheel Drive

Post by R.C.MAN »

Hi yall, Ive had this car for ages and decided to convert it to a Drifter ala. RWD.
I ripped it apart, polished the top and bottom plate, built a custom front sus. for it, made it all adjustable. Camber, caster, ackerman, kpi.
Trying to find parts for this car is a pain too, but I buy most of them from old broken TF 2s I find on ebay.
Since I fly Helis too. I decided to use a heli motor I had laying around and made an adapter to fit it on the car.
Everybody I drift with says, What? A Outrunner, lol.
As ya need a Gyro for the lightning switch backs on the track and concistant drifts, I used a Spartan Quark as the gyro and a DS615 for the steering servo.
Both very fast.
I made some pics of it for yall to look at.

Wow, thats some steering! I've always wanted to try drifting with a gyro to see what the difference is.

Hey Smoke, Thanks.
notarex, I use a gyro only on a RWD (rear wheel drive) car, If ya try without 1, youll have a heck of a time controlling your car.
As the steering has to be very fast, and a normal person dosnt have the reaction to keep it online, that is, it takes time for your hands
to react to what your eyes see, and when you realize its getting to sideways, its to late to react, the rear will be spinning around.
To set a RWD car up, I do doughnuts and 8s, than set it up for straight line driving, than put the gyro on.
Tires are very important also. as is the over 70deg. steering angles.

So, I did a short vid today in my garage, I was testing a new compound for my drift tires.
Not too bad, but I dont like how the car reacts on switchbacks. I normaly drive on polished concrete or asphalt.
Im using a softer delrin tire on the front, and a harder plastic on the back, (I make my own tires  )
My garage floor is a cement floor with a bunch of bumps in it, but it gets me in the ball park for the tracks I run on.
Im always testing tires, I must have about 50 sets laying around, some good, some very bad.
These were a set I made at work again, but my last batch was a lot better on polished concrete (tested in my garage first)
Ill try these also on the track, maybe there better on a polished surface.
