PB ACE Shell Resto - Help

Post by Mike73 »

Ok need some constructive advice please, not but a repro shell , I’m laboriously removing paint off an old PB Ace shell. It was painted both sides and on the outer it seems to be car paint.
It’s coming of with Carson slowly however I previously used Tamiya to remove inner and ran out so tried nitro fuel and dot 4. So end result will be a cloudy shell with some tiny flecs Of red. It’s an old bod and has cracks as well but you can’t get these in an exact repro with the window grid etc.
Id appreciate some constructive advice on painting appreciate any tips on colour and techniques that may work please much appreciated.

P.S If anyone has a spare original shell

I'm thinking, paint it red, with tape stripes on the outside...... that red fogging seems pretty bad. Could mix it up somewhat, with translucent red backed with something interesting.... but it doesn't look like much chance of being able to paint light colours on the inside.

Interested to see where this goes.... will be watching.

Thanks Alex I think your right some darker colour pearlescent or something maybe or a faded multi shaded effort. Hoping someone may have been there done it before. Perhaps they have and chucked it

If it wasn’t such a rare shell I wouldn’t be so fussed….

Have you tried Tamiya Polycarbonate Cleaner? Dunno if it's any better, worse, or the same as Carson but worth a shot?

BoLink Body Wash was the best but sadly you can't get it any more unless you can find an old bottle somewhere.

I started with the tamiya and it worked well taking the paint of the inside, this was purple, this outside paint is like a car rattle spray I think and its a different story. I'll keep cleaning, using cotton wool and the carson to drag off as much as i can, going to have to have an ingenious colour scheme to hide all this clouding though!!

As the car paint seems to be stubborn and almost etched into the lexan I used the Carson and a fine abrasive pad rubbed them wiped with cotton wool. This seems to help although still have a cloudy white look to it. Gonna take some time to drag all of this colour off so little and often will be order of the day.
Talked this through with a few peops and It’s been suggested painting white and depending how I get on maybe red if there are flecks I can’t get out, we’ll see how I go…..
