LIGHTNING HOLE rc10
I was recently asked if I ended up with a copy of the original work sheet for the lighning holes chassis mod for the RC10. Unfortunately I sold the sheet along wth chassis a while back. I did however just discover I had some pics in my Photobucket pictures file. So anyway here's what I have to share. Cheers- Jason.

Re: LIGHTNING HOLE rc10
Ive never really understod the chassis drilling concept.Approx how much weight would that save?It says after the mod you will need to adjust spring tension so it must take off a bit of weight.I recently bought a graphite car that is drilled like that,I think fitting the smallest electronics would be a better weight saving sollution. That document is very interesting though as the holes arnt evenly spaced,I wonder if this was to ballance the car?

Re: LIGHTNING HOLE rc10
That was from an issue of Competition Plus magazine (I have the issue). And fitting "small" electronics wasn't much of an option in 1988... there wasn't really anything very small out there.
The reason they harped on in that article was a claim of "allowing dirt to escape the chassis" as well as lightening. I never drilled any of my cars and never cared for that look. Again, back then, there was no such thing as chassis balancing, either. That was one of the placebo "race tweaks" for RC10 owners after the JRX2 came out and started kicking ass everywhere.

Re: LIGHTNING HOLE rc10
I always thought drilling holes in chassis did 3 things.
1. Weakened it
2. Let in more dirt.
3. Gave the underside of the car more items to get snagged on when bottoming out on the track.
Go figure?

Re: LIGHTNING HOLE rc10
i always figured when someone put a lot of holes in an r/c chassis, it was because they got a new drill bit set for christmas, and they need to try them out on something.
i know i would never do it....................... cough..halsey car..cough..cough...

Re: LIGHTNING HOLE rc10
im thinking due to existing original holes, electronic placement and not to create weak spots along a line if holes were uniform time to eat some more snacks all that thinking has zapped my energy

Re: LIGHTNING HOLE rc10
It may act like that, but you also have to remember that this was all happening over 20 years ago. Back then, having a modified chassis or part was "trick" or "awesome". I think the hobby has evolved enough where we now know what works and what doesn't.bearrickster wrote:Wouldnt it just acted like a cheese grader when it landed off jumps and fill the car with dirt? I don't even want to post a picture of an LXT chassis that I have that was "customized" by a friend.
