From the pics, having never seen either car in person, this appears to have a stiffer chassis than the Lexan 1/12 car from Schumacher. Any idea how they compare?

As the chassis is designed to flex with the folded sides being used to stiffen it, you could look at 3d printing the chassis in a suitable plastic.

I've already considered this option, but it not ambitious enough considering what I've done already

No clue : the lexan is 2mm thick, I can't say for the Schumacher car...
