- RC12E with original box and uncut body -
I just scored my first 1/12 AE car, couldn't resist the price. Probably one of the oldest AE cars (1978?) and the first 1/12 AE car? The little bug is new built and comes with motor, battery, MSC and instructions. I'll just drop some period correct electronics in it and call it a day. Looking at the size of the box comapred to the body, I guess that these kits didn't include a body and that the racer had to source one himself. Hence my question: what is this body, is it an AE one and is it correct in respect of the age of the car?
Now, if only I could grab a RC100, I'd be very happy, one day...
More pictures when I'll be able to put my fingers on it I'm sure Geoff will spit a bit on his keyboard watching at this

Very nice Christmas present David! The body is a TOJ, certainly period correct, although the car looks to be from 1980 or so going by the "late" servo saver arrangement and rear chassis brace.
Love to see some pics when you get it. It's similar to the one I restored here:

It also appears to have a small servo radio tray, Futaba FP-S20 would be correct, they're tiny.
Here's a similar setup to mine, the servos are large S7's (about the size of an S148) so you'd need to hack the tray.

Not thinking $40 is that great of a deal on that though. Just an example of the period correct gear.

Body looks like Associated's TOJ SC303. The original backing lexan, possilbly also had the year 1978, but it was because the TOJ 303 was a backup car at the 78 Lemans, and won the Nurburgring in the same year.

The little 1/12th gem arrived and I must say I love it even though it's the very first 1/12th scale car I own, never been a huge fan of carpet racing... Nothing is missing inside the box, it even came with the French translation of the manual and price tag! Body has been partially trimmed and is in superb condition as well. Even the tires are still in very good shape after all those years, boy I was 3 years old when this car was firstly released

Re: - RC12E with original box and uncut body -
I noticed that right after looking at the pictures. Unfortunately I only had time to rapidly take some pictures of it and put it back in the box. I'll have to take some shots with the body on but it needs to be trimmed a bit further.templeofspeed wrote:Super nice, David! Get those front wheels right side out...
I was wondering when the fiberglass radio tray came out and if it was ever included in the kits or just available as a hop-up?
Thanks for the kind words guys!

Re: - RC12E with original box and uncut body -
I'm pretty sure the fglass radio tray was available as a hop-up from the beginning. I have one of the last 12E kits (from about 1986) which came with the 'glass tray (S32 sized) and also the "wedge" chassis, wide rear brace and 12i front arms. It's a funny thing...I was wondering when the fiberglass radio tray came out and if it was ever included in the kits or just available as a hop-up?

Re: - RC12E with original box and uncut body -
I just noticed that the servo saver on the box is different from the one on the manual and my version. Is this another illusive part, was it ever released and has anyone ever seen/own one?
I'm also interested in finding the electronics that are on the bo art car, what kind of servo/radio combo should I look for and will I have to hack the radio plate to make those servos fit?
Cheers guys!

The servo saver on the box is an RC100/200 part and was only on the earliest 12e's. But also the rear bearing blocks were different (as well as the shape of the radio tray) if you want to recreate the box art car. I have not held in my hands a 12e so early...but did see one on ebay a few years ago. I don't recall it selling, too high of an opening bid and really pretty rough.
The radio gear shown is standard FP-T2F; S6 (or S7) servos, R2F Rx. You will have to open up the radio tray for those servos. Your car is new enough that the S20 micro servos were available, and they drop right in. Or split the difference and use S32H servos, with minor cutting. Or find one of the larger cutout radio trays...I think Darryn might have one or two.
Just so you know what to look for:
