Custom RC10

I started posting some beginning stages of this project on the What was old is... still old, but a lot newer thread when it was suggested that I start a new thread. Not a bad idea, I tend to post a lot of photos, cant go wrong with lots of photos and sorry for any repetitive photos and ebay photos that might be yours

Anyway... here is my build so far... it's not complete yet, I got more parts on the way.

It first started off with this old chassis, which I thought I could make a reasonably cost effective custom RC10 from. I now know anything custom ends up being expensive.

Then I stripped it and threw what parts on that I had

I thought it would be nice not to have to worry about scratching the pretty aluminum so I powder coated it with a hardened textured surface

That looks killer. One thing I would do is to run braces from the rear bulkhead to the attach point of the front nose tubes. with a cut down chassis, length wise rigidity will be diminshed.

i thought that might come up, but I haven't came up with a solution yet. There is a pic on the thread mentioned above that had braces. Maybe I'll do something similar.

I got my shocks on now and some parts dyed black now, etc, not much new. I plan on power coating the motor plate an untextured blue to match the nose plate and other blue hardware.

thanks. I cant wait to see yours. I thought I would add mine to the old but newer thread,(I know that's not the exact title) but that's getting kinda long. there is a lot of useful info on that thread too. Maybe once I get mine finished I will add some final pics to it... or, start a tribute thread to it. It's been my bible for this ride. There have been some cool custom builds on this site.

thanks, I was thinking of cutting up some 1/2" strips of aluminum from a really bad chassis and mount the strips vertically from the rear bulkhead mounts holes to just behind the nose tubes. I would strip these pieces and powder coat them blue at the same time I would do my motor plate. My other thought was to find some carbon fiber strips that would work in the same way. Or I could run tubes to the rear like aeiou did, but wanted to try some different

Did you do the powder coating your self? or did you take it some where? How much did it set you back?

Very nice looking buggy. I have one sitting in the closet, and I want to do something like this with it!

I had to take it somewhere. I just looked up powder coating companies in the area and took a chance. It only cost $20 cash and it turned out awsome. I plan on getting the motor plate powder coated blue, similar to the nose plate to tie it all in. I was told that would cost a little extra, because they would make a special batch of powder, probably $25-30. Since they were already spraying the black with the hardener when I did my chassis I was in luck .

I would figure out what you want on your chassis and then check around to see what each company is currently spraying to save a few bucks. But if that's not an issue, just look to see who you think would do the best job.

i don't know if i'd powdercoat the motor plate. that's not gonna help it dissapate heat from the motor. unless you don't plan on running the car, then it wouldn't really matter.

i am going to run it. i didn't think too much on the heat distribution. Maybe i should anodize it instead. i hear you can do it at home with the right chemicals. i will have to look it up.

You could get a motor heatsink if it's a concern. If you like the way they look that is. There are other styles and you could find one cheaper, but here's an example. You'd probably need one with just one set of fins up higher to accommodate the motor guard.

there's a couple threads on here from guys who have done their own anodizing. i'll see if i can find any of them.

i talked to a some what local place by me about getting some parts anodized. he told me he'd do as many parts that will fit in the tank at one time for $100. i'm gonna do everything in my power to fill that tank when the time comes.
