Lubing Tranny Gears?

Post by hardenedways »

I just rebuilt a transmission (Stealth) that came with one of my trucks.
The manual doesn't say anything about putting oil or grease on the gears. What is the common practice here? Do you just run them dry? I did notice some black dust in the case.

Thanks for your input!!

leave it dry. that black dust is just from the wear on the gears.

that's why they make replacement gears. they are designed to be run dry. you can't oil them cause it's not a sealed gearbox. if you grease the gears, they will not spin freely. i always replaced the idler and diff gear everytime i rebuilt the diff. they're just like brakes on a car, they cause dust, they wear out, then you replace them.
