Need help identifying these tranny gears

Post by Savage03 »

I got this 6 gear tranny in a parts lot and since I redid my original tranny I was just gonna clean this one up and sell it. When I first picked it up and spun the spur it was very smooth and was like hmm maybe I will swap it with mine! Well popped it open and the obvious is the pitch of the gears, I dont recall other gears made back in the day but I was young to so who knows. Anyway anyone know who made these? 64pitch?
Thanks for any help.

I had the same problem with trying to identify those gears. At least you have a complete trans. Those are thorp 48p gears.

Thanks guys. Thinking about just swapping it now into my rc10 its so much better then my original but then the car isnt really original after that. Should I or shouldnt I ? lol
Another thing for the ones that have messed with these gears, the gear that slides over the slipper hub mine doesnt get tight enough like on the stocker after you tap it on, do you have to maybe glue this one on or something?

keep them. they're a great mod for the 6 gear tranny. just take everything apart and clean off the rust and gunk. you'll have a more effiecent tranny than with the 32p gears, and quieter too.

as for the diff tube, i would say get another one. you could find one easily. those tubes could get "warped" easily. probably from the last pinion that was sitting atop. or if you want to try again...put the diff tube in a hole of a 2x4 or in a slightly open vise (with a rag) and put the pinion on top. put the butt of a flat head screw driver on top of the pinion and slowly hit the tip of the flat head screw driver with a crescent wrench(or something similar. not to heavy of a tool). not too hard! or you'll mushroom the pinion or crush the tube. check it and it should be good. if not grab another diff tube. just remember not to hit it too hard.

Yea I tried that but its like it slides on so far its bottoming out so it doesnt get tighter as it goes on. Checked ebay and all I found was the white gears. Would putting a dab of super glue on it hold?

The diff tube and pinion are a tapered for a press fit. If done correct it should be tight and the teflon bushing should seat in halfway to the pinion. If not the pinion is not going to mesh correctly with the diff . I can't really tell in the pics but the pinion gear doesn't look like has much taper left in the bore and was spinning on The diff tube . That diff tube in the pics looks ok .

now i got a question regarding the pinion and the diff tube. what do you guys do to take this pinion off the tube. because taking one off is probably the most pain in the ass jobs on the 6 gear rc10's. aside from getting the gear mesh right on the idler and center gears.
