-Four's RC10 Worlds Car rebuild thread

Post by Four »

How's going?!

I was sent over here from RCTech.net and had trouble getting my account going until now. I started a thread over there and this will basically be a duplicate of that thread I had started. Not much enthusiasm over there for the RC10, so I am happy I got my account up and running.

I am an avid member on IWSTI and Nasioc which is for the Subaru WRX STI. I have had an STI since 2006.

But, that is not why I am here so.. on to the topic of the thread.

Lately I have been having a good time with family members and getting our RC cars running. I decided to do a brief history as I am going to rebuild it completely. So here is the History.

This is the start of this build. This is actually my 3rd "Hobby Grade" RC Car. My first was a Futuba FX10 and then I got into racing and needed a Team Associated RC10. I picked up a used RC10 Graphite and everything I needed to run it for $75 when I was about 10- 12 years old.

Racing was a bit expensive when you are that young and only get a small allowance every 2 weeks. I only raced the car a few times. I wasnt competitive, but it was a lot of fun. I also couldnt afford to replace parts if they broke.

After I was a bit older, I wanted a newer car. I sold my old RC10 to my girlfriends little brother and bought the current car I have today. It was purchased around the time I was in 9th-10th grade which puts it at about 1995-1996.

As it turns out, about 14-15 years later, I have been doing some research and found that apparently this car is actually quite a collectors item. As I am sure most of you know, there arent many around. As I have gotten back into this, I have found it is pretty difficult to find replacement parts for this car and when I do find them, they are expensive.

Now I dont plan on keeping the car mint or getting it back to mint, but I am doing what I can to keep it as original as possible and if appears a bit beat up, it is. It has been and always will be a runner. So.. on to some pics huh!

The Box. Exciting isnt it.
Image

I do not have any pictures of it from back in the day. These are the only shots that I have from about 2-3 years ago when I got it running again with all new electronics less the speed control. Notice the unchipped paint job and the sweet antenna made out of a plastic tie wrap
Image

Image

Since that time I have upgraded to a brushless motor last year. I took out my current racing set up and replaced it with some updated technology.

Ancient speed control and a stock 27turn motor. Stock motors were the only thing we could race with and I stuck with what worked.
Image

The Brushless system. This was fun for a while. Since then my soon to be brother in law purchased a couple of cars and has been blowing me out of the water for speed. I figured it was time for an upgrade to play with the more modern cars.

Now for what it looks like it its current condition. I have bashed this thing around for the last couple of years and it really took a beating since upgrading to brushless which double the speed. Parts tend to get broken.

The teardown begins

Broken A-Arm Mount
Image

Broken rear bulk head
Image

Cut Motor Plate - to accommodate a heat sink which is no longer needed on the brushless set ups.

The restoration

As I stated I started looking for parts to rebuild this and have spent a decent amount of money just getting some little things.

Rear wheels for this car are impossible to find anymore. Somehow I only have one of the original rear wheels left. I came across a large set of wheels and tires on ebay for a RC10 B2/B3. These arent designed for the worlds car, but I was able to modify them all so they will fit.
Image

As posted above, the car in its current condition. I have started to clean it. tear it appart and rebuild. I have many parts on order and on there way.
Image

The list
-Mamba Max 7700kv Brushless Motor and Speed Control
-New stealth transmission to be torn down and replace the needed parts on my tranny
-Motor mount plate
-New bearings
-New body
-Rear wing mounts
-Rear wing
-New Aluminum screw kit
-New nose tubes

Already Installed
-3m "E-Z pass" Velcro on the receiver and speed control
-New antenna tube - a real one!
-Futuba high torque stearing servo
-Collection of 48p spur and pinion gears
-New Servo Saver
-Added another battery pack to the collection
-New front ribbed tires
-New Proline Dirt Hawg and Bowtie rear tires
-Rear bulkhead
-Complete rear suspension
-Rear Shock Tower
-MIP CVDs

I will update as I get parts on the car.

New Parts are in.

Rear bulkhead
Complete new rear end with ball bearings
New shock tower

Since this, I have replaced the bulkhead again with an original Worlds car part and kept the Worlds shock tower. I do have a replacement on its way in case I need it.

All installed

Since these pics were taken, I modified the bulkhead a bit. It was exactly like the worlds bulk head. I had to drill some different holes, but otherwise it fits and it's black, so I am happy! I did a little bit of research and I guess the Worlds bulk head was the same as the RC10 DS. I never knew there was a difference until today.

Also the shock tower here; I picked up for $2.00. I wasnt going to pay $15+ for the worlds car shock tower for a backyard basher.

It is great to be back in this sport though. I am having as much fun with this little guy as I do my STI!

Wing Tubes came in today. Now these are really exciting!

I had a set when I got the car, but never installed them because I wasnt going to run a wing. Well.. that has changed now..

New parts here again! This time it is the new Castle Creations Mamba Max 7700 Motor/ESC Combo and a new Team Associated Wing.

I was able to test run the motor with one of the NICD packs I have. Only my old Trinity EX Tech pack with let the thing run, my other 3 would just let it crawl. It is about as fast as my Novak set up was, but I have 2 new NIMH Battery packs that will be here today. Doubt I will get a test run in as it is snowing right now.

Other parts on the way:
Deans connectors
New Body
Misc screws and chassis parts
Transmission parts
New/Different Shock Tower
Also picked up a new Charger to handle the NIMH packs.

New parts came in the last few days.

Aluminum Nose Tubes - see the old one is a little bent out of shape
Image

Aluminum screw set and 2 Nimh batteries
Image

Image

I started putting some of the screws in, but I am going to pull the front end apart and clean it first.

I also fixed up my old Worlds Car Shock tower as they are really hard to come by. Wanted to stick with that original look. Yes, I also know the car is filthy. We went out and had some fun on a few bike trails. Ill clean it up soon when some new parts start rolling in.
Image

I got it running yesterday and the day before with the new set up. It is ridiculously fast. I had the timing turned all the way down and had it geared with a 15T/93T Pinion and spur gears. It was almost as fast as my friends Traxxas Rustler with the VXL on a 3s lipo.

I then swapped the pinion and spurs out for a 17t/83T and it is getting a bit insane now. I was pulling a couple of wheelies when I could get traction. Also shattered my first antenna tube in a flip. The motor stays relatively cool as well as the controller and battery. So for right now, I am satisfied with the power of the car.

I also ran into my first problem. There are small pins that are held in by a set screw in my CVDs (Constant velocity drive shaft) and the RPM of the shaft is causing the pins to come out. So I purchased some loctite, pulled the CVDs apart and rebuilt them with the loctite holding the pins in as well as the set screw. I tested it last night and it seems to be holding so far.

I have a body on its way, CF shock tower replica of the original, original rear bulk head and an original fiberglass battery strap. Turns out these things are super hard to find. I had a few hobby shops that had them listed on their site, but everyone I called said it was out of stock and discontinued. I found one in France on ebay, but someone beat me to it. Finally I found another one on ebay. it isnt in the greatest condition, but I am hoping a light run with some sand paper with clean it up.

Not my car, but it is the white thing that holds the battery down.

Body came in today. After some research, I found it is a Protech II body. Custom painted and purchased off of ebay.

Project coming in the next few days is definitely clean up the car. I have a handful of parts still coming and will be updating as things change.
I'd like to get some new turnbuckles, but will be looking into that and some other odds and ends.

That's it for now and you are all caught up! I have been wanting to get on this site with all the info that pertains to the RC10. So Hello again and happy to be here!

ha ha, yeah I know they are on backwards. Just on there for the pics. I am going to start tearing it down again to give it a good cleaning. Then when the newer parts come in, they will go right on.

I cant take credit for the paint. It is way beyond my ability, but thank you anyway!

For anyone that is interested, this is where I got the body from. http://myworld.ebay.com/dsloomer/

What a stange way to fix the body in the front!
But finally it is surely a good idea, because I experimented again the original way, and I had to make a large oblong hole to sweat the body mount.

May be I will try for next body...

Small update. Got these in the mail today.
Image

Also ended up ordering another set of MIP CVDs as one of mine is bent, which is causing it to vibrate and then the pins come out of the joint.

Things have been a bit slow. I have been collecting parts getting things together.

Right now I am trying to find a black motor plate, but not having any luck. Found a couple in gold, but none in black..

I did get my worlds battery brace in today and it looks flawless! I also have new CVDs on the way as I broke one this weekend hitting the tire of a parked car at about 40mph. Ouch!

Ill post some pics later when I have some more parts in

Not a lot to update. Have a few parts that came in the last week.

Got an actual worlds bulkhead to replace the "other replacement" that I had picked up.
Modified bulkhead is on the left and worlds bulkhead on the right

Took the stealth apart, cleaned it up and put the new foam gasket on.

Battery bar came in and looks better than what I was anticipating. I also picked up some titanium turnbuckles and anther set of rear A-arm holders. Just in case..
Image

Also took the time to take apart the front end an clean off all the schmutz up front. I think the turnbuckles will look nice and hope to clean up the rust on the screws as well.
Image

I have been putting some plans together to do a possible 3/16 conversion on the rear to fit the newer rear rims. Most likely wont happen until I get back from vacation. Also plan on a couple Turbo Mirage bodies as I have already broken my flame body from over the weekend.
