Hotshot Steering Question

so i been slowly working on my hotshot re-re.... finally got to the servo/electronics setup...

is there anyway to increase steering a bit on these cars? basically the steering is a direct servo turn (like frog and others). no bellcranks or anything to increase throw.. are there any tricks/upgrades to this? if i added a large/longer servo saver would that help? would give it just a bit more "throw". any ideas?

I don't think one of the large Kimbrough servo savers will fit in the channel they made in the chassis... I know what you mean, though.. Just doesn't seem to turn enough.

i was going to put washers under the servo to raise the servo a little to fit it in the channel, going to try it out tonight

I have done a servo mod to my fox which has worked very well.

Havent done it to the Hot Shot but is the same set up.

I used a larger sevo horn from a linkage of the original Brat.

Had to raise the lower bumper under guard by putting some spacers to give enough clearance for the larger horn.

It really transformed my Fox and has a tight steering lock now.

Might do it to my Hot Shot but its not as bad as the Fox.

yea thats what i am going to do.. im going to raise up the servo in the bottom case by putting some washers underneath, and then washers under the bumper plate if needed.

going to use this hopefully it will work

Im not sure if there is enough room in the chassis fot that kimbrough servo saver..

Might require extensive Dreamaling to the chassis as well as raising the servo.

My Brat saver was just longer end part of the saver that was simple jb welded in and srewed.

I reckon there needs to be some kind of bell crank type mod done. Not sure where to start with that one but when i do get stuck in to my Hot Shot at some point i will try the A&L style possibly. It wont be easy Im sure.

i don't have one, so i don't know what the steering knuckles look like. but, can the steering tie rods be moved closer to the axle to increase the throw?

i was thinking of some sort of bellcrank setup, but the "front bumper plate" would need to be a bit stronger, maybe carbon fiber.. it has a slight warp to it so it might be hard.. i might give it a shot though somehow.. ill post progress

added a set of houge bellcranks into the lower chassis plate.. fits well. electronics are a bit tight but with a spektrum micro reciever and a small brushless ESC it will be fine. added a graphite plate on the bottom to strengthen everything. had to dremel the chassis part a bit, but fits and steerings perfectly.

with this mod, the wheels will now turn to the full radius that the front hubs will go so understeering isnt a problem anymore. waiting for some dubro rod ends to come in to mount it up...

Hey Mike you are doing a good Job there.

I was thinking along the lines of a Boomerang rack set up.

Hope you have enough clearance for the links and mounting the bumper.

My Hot Shot is awaiting for its new suspension upgrade from Rc Channel. I have just ordered four shocks for it too.

I may look at the Boomerang set up while im at it.

for this issue..........I have been searching in the internet for a while...........finally got these photos (from some Jap webpage).........

one is using TA05 bellcrank........the other one with Avante 2001........

Well im still thinking of which mod to do the steering set up.

I have a set of Top Force bell cranks with alloy post and bearings and would be silmilar to what has done here already.

On the other hand RC Channel has just realised there steering kit too.

Totally different to whats here but i think its so the chassis isnt modified at all.
Just two screw holes. Looks good but may affect ground clearance a little as the bell cranks are mounted below the chassis which is coverd by their own skid plate.

For $30 U.S its a little steep i think but you know it will work. There parts are excellent as i have their Pro metal kit with four shocks and seems to be really good.

Anyone else has their steering Mod Kit.??????

Looks like the tao5 setup is a better way to go. The pivots of the front arms are about the same width as the ballends on the bellcranks. Best bet for minimizing bump steer...

I guess most doing this mod are mounting the ESC and receiver where?

I noticed one of the problems on the stock setup is that the ball stud in the servo saver in full sweep is hitting the front gearbox minimizing full throw. Have to get a little creative with the dremel, I guess....

Why with all of Tamiya's engineering prowess do they always seem to overlook the simple stuff? Sloppy steering links, bump steer, etc. All you have to do is look at the rear suspension on the original Hotshot to know they could do better in other areas. *Rant over*
