Literally, the location of where Associated was at the time. The early cars are called "Edinger" cars because they were made at a smaller location in California. After they moved, there was kind of a change in production details. Collector nerds hold the Edinger cars in some sort of higher esteem because some believe that they were rare or very small production numbers, but based on everything told to us by people who were actually there at the time, there was no small production run of anything ever and changes were almost always running production alterations.

It's essentially a hypothetical point in time in which some people think the cars held/hold a different mythical value.

In reality, there is no difference, really.

The very early RC10'S have certain parts in them that other RC10'S don't. I think thats why us nerds like them. Granted there are box kits out there with the edinger adderess and are nothing more than than a caddy kit.

But really, the number of actual Edinger cars with Goodyear tires, fiberglass battery straps or the distinctive deep lower battery cups is infinitely small compared to the number of cars that actually were produced at the Edinger location. It's a complete misnomer to believe that all Edinger cars are some sort of rare collectible RC car. There are dozens of other RC10s that are more collectible or rare than an Edinger-produced standard gold pan RC10.

The problem is, so many people that aren't collectors run across their 25-year old RC tub chassis in their closet still in the box it came in, the do a quick search on RC10s in Google and see that so many collector's (or poseurs) put such a "value" on the very, very early cars made at the Edinger location, that they assume that ALL cars made at that location are rare.

Everyone thinks that they are sitting on a gold mine with their old gold RC10, when the truth is, very few RC10s ever made are truly "worth" a lot of money. Most are just one from hundreds of thousands of cars made that are still in existence.
