Resurrecting my car and making it a Bad A$$

Post by Zmd73 »

Hello Forum,

I am dusting off my old RC10. This forum has given me the creative juices to get her alive again. First I am looking to whiten my plastic (Thanks for the great write-ups it looks easy to make it look nice :) ) Now I have the first gen pre A or B stamps. This being said I know I don't have the Stealth Trany.

Question 1. What is the difference between them?
Question 2. Will it handle a Brushless Motor?
Question 3. If not where can I get a complete Stealth Trany?

Next I am looking to update all electronics on her. Thanks for all the write-ups it has helped me make some decisions on buying these things that are affordable and reliable :D. These are the items I am looking to get. Charger will be Thunder AC680, Radio FlySky FS-GT3B , Battery GEN Ace 5000mAH, Motor ?? I have read A few Brushless Posts.

Question 4. What could I go with since I am trying to keep everything in budget? (Looking to Bash more than race for now)

Thanks Forum I want revive her and have my daughter and I have some fun with it :D

To answer a couple questions:

No, the 6 gear tranny has idler gears that will grenade quickly with brushless and lipo power. I know because I went through two, lol.

Someone here has a template for drilling early chassis for the stealth.

Your list of items is good. I have the fly sky and gens ace and both are excellent. I'm running a Castle Mamba Max and 4600 kv motor which is awesome but I needed to upgrade all my parts to newer stuff to cope with the power. I put a Tracxas brushed ESC and Titan 12T brushed motor in my sons car with a 6 gear and it was fine for awhile but even that eventually grenaded the 6 gear so I did a switch to a Castle Sidewinder SV2 and 4600kv motor.

One other thing, try the JC Racing wheels from the UK which are 2.2" wheels and they fit right on the stock axles but you can use modern rubber.

Hope that helps!

What transmition should I be looking for to fit on to my car. I want to go Lipo/Brushless :). What are the parts I need to retro fit it? I have no problem drilling a few holes to make it work. Drill baby drill :D .

Easiest solution is to just buy a newer B stamp chassis. There is a stealth drill hole template that another member did up which you can print off and use to drill your existing chassis.

I have been looking on ebay for a roller perhaps I can use but I can't tell what Transmition or stamp it has from the descriptions? Is there a tell tell sign to picking one out ?

Yep, look on the bottom for the four smaller screws. Or, hopefully on the side shot you can see the smaller tranny in the back.

A 6 gear (thats what you have now) is square/boxy looking and a stealth is more rounded and kinda looks like 3 gears stacked up.

What kind of shape is the chassis in? if its in really good shape with little to no scratches on the bottom I wouldnt drill for the stealth. No reason to wreck a good early chassis when there are plenty of stealth hole ready chassis available for cheap. If its all beat up go ahead and drill away!!! LOL

I would also suggest you post some pics before you make any serious mods so we can take a look at it. You never know, you might have a gem and not know it! Remember, you cant undo a hacksaw or drill easily!

So if it has 4 screws on the bottom it is a Stealth?

4 small screws. I'd do a whole lotta skimming this forum for several days and get up to speed on where these old cars are now. I know I left off around 1988 from RC, came back and didn't know about the stealth either!
This place is a treasure trove of RC10 info.

As the last poster mentioned, the stealth trans. has four of the smaller (usually black) 4-40 screws. The six gear trans. has four of the larger greenish aluminum 8-32 screws.

This will help for looking for a roller. Sorry for being a noob on the differences. But all this info comes in handy to look out for the right Trany. I have seen a few tubs with a brushless motor on YouTube and they are smokin. I want to hop it up and bring it back from death. Originaly I thought I couldn't do it without breakin the bank. This forum's suggestions has made it possible. Wife  won't let me go on a spending spree :( .

If you can see the bottom of the chassis...here is what a 6 gear chassis looks like (no holes for stealth tranny), and normally ALL A stamp 6 gear only chassis are gold. I had this one powdercoated black:

Here is a 6 gear transmission:

Here is a B stamp (gold) chassis, you can see the extra set of holes for the smaller stealth tranny:

another way to tell, if you can see the tranny brace across the top (say the car you are looking at has no bottom pictures), the stealth bolts are narrow & 6 gear bolts are wide:

Here is an RPM conversion tranny for the Stealth, a little different looking than the 2 above:
