MIP Transmission Compatibility

Post by joeyskates »

Does anyone know of any other transmission internals that are compatible with the old MIP transmission? I've been wondering for awhile since I have 2 of them with custom gears and differentials. One tranny seems to have a Thorp differential with MIP differential gear and I have another one with the same diff but some wider heavy duty unknown diff gear.

I've also wondered if any of the various Associated Stealth Transmissions have anything that is compatible with the old MIP but didn't think so since all the various ratio Stealth differential gears I've seen always had more teeth?

Any ideas? Thanks!

Honestly, I didn't think any other diff pieces would work in an MIP. I don't think I have ever seen any other pieces that were made to work with an MIP. There may have been a few resourceful individuals who custom adapted things, but I don't know of anything out of the package that was made for the MIP.

And, I would be interested in seeing the gear diff parts. I have a new gear diff and parts, and I'd be interested in seeing what was different to your pieces.

Doug, here are some pics of the "heavy-duty" one. As you can see, all of the gears and differential are alien to the transmission.

I have an update though, I knew I saw this diff complete with wide gear somewhere before and here it is on Tamiyaclub.com. Turns out its for the SRB series of cars.

Here is also some cool info if anyone is interested.

So since the diff is for an SRB, maybe the rest of the gears are too? The other thing that puzzles me is that the top shaft is threaded to accept something outside the case for maybe a gear like the MIP 4wd conversion? Anyone have access to an SRB with the MIP 4wd conversion which has the speedometer cable to drive the front wheels? Is this what the top shaft is threaded to accept?

My other MIP tranny is all MIP except the Thorp Differential.

Haha I did some more research and yeah the top shaft is threaded to accept a speedometer cable to drive the front wheels of the 4wd MIP SRB kit. Now I just need an SRB

I remember reading here, that the bigger GT diff fits into the MIP case, I don't remember what thread that was though.

The GT diff gear is the same tooth count but it needs to be narrowed to fit inside the MIP Change Box.

Joey, to answer your original question. Tamiya Sand Scorcher gears are compatible with the MIP gear boxes.
