RC10 Manual Speed Control

I have a manual speed control in a Gold pan RC10 I recently picked up. I would like to keep this simply for the vintage appeal, knowing that it will not be as functional as a newer ESC. This will be a model mostly for display anyway. I tried searching in this section without luck. Is there anything I should do to make this more functional since it has probably been sitting unused for years? This is the wiper style speed control. My only experience with manual speed controls was years ago on a Traxxas Hawk and Tamiya Paajero - both a pain as I recall.

Pages 39 - 46 tells you everything you need to know. This is from the 1990 Championship Edition manual but should hold true for all RC10's.
