Mugen Bulldog Restoration

I have started restoring a mugen bulldog I recently picked up mainly as I used to race one back in the 80's at St Ives show ground and hoping to make this one a runner for the next vintage meet in Castle hill.

Now I know its a Mugen Bulldog II however hoping to change it back to the original mugen with a rollcage.

If anyone has a spare rollcage they are willing to part with please let me know

The front bumper is something unique I haven't seen before and hope not to see again. Its riveted together with sheet steel over the top of the original.

I'm looking at replacing the hubs with Optima steel hubs and locking the steering.

Unsure what wheels used to fit these hubs with the hex nut, ill see if i can find some old photos. If anyone can remember let me know.

Have found one of the old brass steering frame mods in my box of old stuff so will be using this however am going to need to make the internal frame part as don't think i have one of them anywhere

I have a carbon fibre bottom plate somewhere however have moved several times since and who knows which box its in so might have to make one.

Have a set of gold associated shocks waiting to go on.

For the diffs I was just going to just replace the balls. Anyone have any memory on the size of the replacement as all i remember is that you had to drill the holes out.

Hopefully get some time this weekend to strip it down.

I have one of these on the way, so not much help. The original one I have coming has wheels like these, not sure if that answers your question though. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

I have the original set of wheels like your picture however they dont fit the optima hub that has a hex nut.

Post some pics when yours turns up.

Welcome to the forum. I had an original Bulldog back in '87 that was second hand and came fully bearinged. It also had black diff pulleys and spur gear instead of red. I was told that they were aftermarket parts, but I never found out who made them. The diffs still slipped badly.

The 12mm hex drive used on the Optima is an industry standard, there are literally hundreds of wheels that fit them. For vintage if you want vintage then anything by Kyosho after the Optima will fit, the same with any Tamiya from the Avante onwards.

For modern options there are loads of buggies using a 12mm hex drive, even Associated uses it.
