Any other Aquarist here?

Post by Steve71 »

Any of you guys fellow aquarist / fish keepers at all? I've been into fish keeping on and off for a very long time but got back into it very deeply again about 8 years ago. I keep mostly cichlids but a couple years ago got into polypterus bichirs which are a prehistoric species I find fascinating. Currently have a 240g 6'x2'x30" cichlid tank, a 75g Oscar tank, a 4'x2'x2' bichir/datnoid tank, a 75g bichir & koi tank, a 20g bristol nose pleco tank, and am just starting on building a palurdium. I also make the 3D backgrounds in my tanks out of hand carved foam then painted and sealed with Pond Shield Pond Armor. Gives the tanks a more natural look that way.

Here's my 240g tank

75g koi tank. I just moved some of my smaller bichirs over into it recently (they are not in the vid) the koi are usually in the pond but come inside for the winter

very cool. I've had aquariums on and off for many years, although typically just a single tank, from 10 up to 29 gallons. The kids wanted a pet, we settled for fish. Currently just have a 29 gallon with a couple of corey cats, and a boat load of black mollies, which started as three adults, hah. one was pregnant when I got it and I think we have maybe a dozen or so from what I can count. There were multiple broods so various sizes.

been experimenting with a DIY algae scrubber which seems to be doing at least a little bit. I'm not getting green algae, it's brown or black hard to tell.

I've had lots of fish in the past, but it's been over 20 years since the last batch. Mostly cichlids, pacus, and a really awesome oscar (named Clyde) that I had for years. He got huge...
I (and my kids) would love to have some now, but I just can't talk the wife into it... :?

My brother and I have both had aquariums in the past, but he was more "into it".
For a while he bred mollies and sold them to the local pet store, for a while we had guppies & tetras and stuff. Most recently he had a bunch of julies.
As for me, I've had a nice albino Betta, and I've also had a really nice Chocolate Australe that we got at a kilifish convention. That was one pretty fish. :)
I enjoy fish, but to me they're too much maintenance and not enough enjoyment. Can't pet/hold them like my dogs.
And I enjoy mechanical stuff like go karts and RC cars more. I NEED SPEED!!!

Isn't it funny that normally we don't name fish, but with oscars I've always named them as well lol. I guess its because they are so personable. Mine is "Walter". Named after Walter Matthau since he was one of my fav actors and played Oscar on the odd couple.

I used to love keeping aquariums. Up until about a month ago, I've had at least one aquarium since I was a kid. I just don't have the motivation to make time to properly care for one now. Maybe again in the future. Your setups look very nice. Well done!
