FINALLY, ready to start on my Trophy Truck
FINALLY, ready to start on my Trophy Truck
Ive had this for MONTHS, and have been chompin at the BITS to get started. Finally got the Wife to let me buy the Tires I needed, so here we go.
This is what I got.
Assembled, with tires. Will (eventually) get 31mm, Offset Wheels all around. These are just the only full set I had Unmounted. I'll be "working on" the Body as well. Previous owner, not much of a "detail person".
Give me some info on it. TA-01? Vintage? Is there any way to "Date" it? Pros...Cons? Whatever you can tell me would be great.

This post will explain it best but basically the diffeence is 30mm of chassis length http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=48983&sid=2193MONSTER wrote:Whats the diff/s in a TA-01 and TA-02?

White Lithium Grease "ok" in the Diffs, or better off with AE Diff Lube?

Re: FINALLY, ready to start on my Trophy Truck
if I remeber correctly the ta-02 has a front gear diff and rear ball diff. in the gear diff, white grease would be fine but I prefer bicycle gear. in the ball dif, you want to use ball diff gease. everywhere else, lithium or bicycle grease.
Re: FINALLY, ready to start on my Trophy Truck
"ball diff gease" would be Stealth Diff Lube? Sorry, for all the noob questions. I only have AE "Black Grease", Stealth Diff Lube, and White Lithium, but I guess I could wait to pick up something else, if need be. I want it to be right.
Re: FINALLY, ready to start on my Trophy Truck
HOLY CRAP this thing cleaned up NICE!!!
BTW, the Stickers on the Body are in "good shape", but peeling a little here and there. Is there a certain Adhesive that can be used to stick down the loose corners?

Re: FINALLY, ready to start on my Trophy Truck
Well, its not much fun to run right now. It makes a very loud whining noise when running, and the binding is AWFUL. If I loosen up the Housing Screws enough to free it up, the Pinion/Spur Slip real bad. I suppose bearings should take care of all the Binding, and at least a little of the Whining. But its NO good as "Crawler". If one Wheel loses the least bit of Traction, it starts spinning. So, about Locking the Diffs, I dont want to Do anything I cant UNdo. Ive heard of people Locking Gear Diff (Front) with Silly Putty, so it can be removed easily. Is there another/better way? Maybe I wont "have" to Lock the Rear Ball Diff, but if I decide to, is there a way to do it that can be UNdone, without having to buy another/parts?
Re: FINALLY, ready to start on my Trophy Truck
Doesnt anyone have any info on NONpermanent ways of Locking Gear and Ball Diffs?

You had it right with the silly putty though there are tougher variants which are better if you want to really lock it down.
This car is not much of a crawler design though: too little ground clearance and way too little reduction for the tiresize.
The basic design came straight from a touringcar.
Better take it to the beach instead.

Oh yeah, I know it wont make a "real" Crawler, I just want to be able to go through a few holes and over some small hills around the yard. Right now it wont go over or through hardly anything. Im gonna try a 27T Stock Motor, Geared REALLY low. If that wont work, I'll see if I can find something with lower turns. Whats the lowest Turned Motor that can be had, that will fit in there.
Just trying have something a little "different", no more than say, someones 1:1 "daily driver" 4WD might do, only scaled down.

Check an industrial moter supplier for anything in 540 size: I picked one up from http://www.conrad.de
Don't know how many turns it has, but it has a cool 5 pole armature like the pullers in the old days. And best of all: itwas about as cheap as your standard mabuchi 540.
