One for Joey 'Mr. XX-4' King...

Post by FasterLouder »

I'm having problems with my XX-4 keeping a clutch set.
I never had any problems when I was running a brushed motor-even a violent 8x1.
I installed a Mamba Max 5700kv brushless system and the clutch just keeps loosening up on me.
Even if I sock it right down,it loosens up again before the battery dumps.
I have replaced the slipper backing plates, both clutches, the belleville washers, the locknut, the thrust bearing,washers...You name it.
I just can't keep it set without it loosening up on me.
I've checked the clutches for burn marks and replace them if I see any.
Yes,I have checked that the threaded rod that the thrust race/washers etc is locktighted in.
Any help would be most appreciated!
I love this car and hate being able to only drive it with the clutches socked right down-I need a working slipper.

When I owned a XX-4 I replaced the threaded 4-40 rod with a longer one and used an Associated slipper spring. Be sure to use a fresh lock nut. If that doesn't work, once you set the slipper where you want it, install another plain nut on top of the locknut and use it as a jam nut. That shouldn't come loose.

With the super torquey 5700, what gearing are you running? If you have enough room, extra belleville washers (maybe 2 more). I run 5 or 6 on there, then a plastic spacer to take up most the slack, then clamp it down, back it off MAYBE a 1/2 turn (probably running it too tight). I havent had issues, even running on blue groove and lifting the front tires off the ground.

That ain't a bad idea,Adam,thanks for that.

Joey-I'm running the purple (what's that an 88?) spur and a 20 tooth pinion.Too much,ya reckon?
Thanks for the help,JK,I'll definitely give that a try.
I'll pull the spur/clutch pack down tonight and see how it looks
My Mamba's Punch Control setting is set at 40%,Start Power at medium.
Should I dial more Punch out?
I like the burst of power out of the corners, where it's at.
I'm going Li-Po,I've ordered a 4000mah,20C Li-Po and it'll be here after the weekend.
Yikes.
Thanks for the help,JK,I'll definitely give those ideas a try.
