Original 6160 Protech Bodies - Roman Numerals

Post by mrlexan »

Anyone ever noticed a roman numeral molded into the early Protech 6160 bodies? I just looked at two of them and I believe them to be early bodies. One of them has a II and the other has a IV. First time I have noticed this. It is hand scribed in the mold at the back lower right corner. Different molds maybe? Anyone know? I don't think I ever remember it being discussed before. Might be a question for websteve.

I had never noticed myself. It just happened to cross the light the right way and I noticed the number plus the difference between the two numerals on the two bodies I had in front of me.

Any truth or way to honestly tell an Edinger body from the others, like vintagerc10 had in one of recent auctions?

well, that little roman numeral might be the only way. someone would have to chime in here with an uncut protech that DEFINATELY came from an edinger kit.

i can't compare mine because my edinger body is somewhere in CT.

if there's a II and a IV, there must be a I and a III

they might have had 4+ molds right from the start. either for mass production, or they had backups in case something happened to the one they were using.

That's what I was thinking. The video that was circulating on their site from long ago showed the machine set up to do two bodies at a time. It would make sense for mass production purposes.

I checked out my edinger and cadillac kits. My edinger definitely has the IV on it. The cadillac body looks like it has a III on it. I don't think pictures would clarify it anymore because it is so subtle.

The American-made non-kit 6160 that I have doesn't seem to have any markings on it. Can't really see through the packaging though. Both the kit bodies have that big old hand-scribed 6160 on the right rear quarter, though. Not sure if that helps with ar least verifying if the body came out of a kit vs. bought seperately.
