I use quality double side tape to mount my weights. I like to have the option of changing the location of the weight and I use the standard AE lead weights

I don’t think so unless maybe the outdrive port holes on the ball diff tranny case can be enlarged to accommodate the out drives of the gear diff (I think I said that right). Not sure if that would work but I believe that the gear diff is not a drop in replacement for the ball diff.

Sounds like your going to run it. It has been sitting since '92, I would rebuild it. I'm sure it needs cleaned and lubed.
