Tire glue?

Post by 8rad »

Hey,

I really hate using CA to mount tires. I run vintage mostly so original rims are not so plentiful. Has anybody found a good alternative to CA that make the tires easier to remove track side without destroying the tires/rims? I am thinking clear silicone or contact cement might work well.

you could try shoe goo maybe? that seems to peel off "in 1 peiece" somewhat easily. im not sure if the solvents in it though will eat the rubber in the tire.. might be something to test on a broken tire.

if the tire are tight on the rim, providing there not modern ultra soft compound, you can get away whit a ruber band on the rim.that would prevent the tire from spining
and you woudnlt have to glued them.

I was just going to mention using a rubber band. Though they end up deteriorating and breaking, and slip once a little dirt gets in there... At least the ones I've used anyway.

I've heard of using silicone but never tried it. I've only glued two sets of tires in my life and vowed never to do it again. Thank goodness for beadlocks.

A lot of guys seem to use too much glue which seems to be why the tires get destroyed. If you use ca it only takes a tiny bit in a couple of places to keep the tire from slipping. I have successfully removed tires mounted in this way with minimal damage, sometimes with a little minor surgery with an Exacto knife.

I have used shoe goo/silicone on a couple sets and it worked ok, the main problem is that the stuff is kinda thick and makes it harder to get the tire on evenly.

I usually use medium CA in 4 spots around the rim. Once that is dry I use a fine applicator tip with thin CA and put a bead along the edge which wicks in and seals the edge to the rim.
The 4 dots of CA are enough to keep the tire from spinning on the rim, but I find that dirt tends to clump up between the glued points and pushes the tire bead up. This is on loose dirt oval racing, so it may not be an issue on hardpack clay or off-road.
this is not very kind to rims, and makes it nearly impossible to get the tire off, which is kinda the point.

For old school runners just use 3-piece wheels or upgrade to modern wheels/axles so you can take advantage of the wheel/tire selection.
