JRX-2 aftermarket build Updated 1/30/19

Post by aconsola »

I'll post pics of my JRX-2 build as it goes.
Here are a couple shots of the parts.
In the mail is 1 rear axle and universal balls and 1 pair of Mip aluminum shock cartriges (to go on my truck so I can swap out the delrin ones to have both vehicles have matched sets of 4.)

It is a mix of good used and lots of NIP parts.
The tranny case, gears, rear bulkhead, chassis plate, rpm front bulkhead, robinson slipper clutch, side links, titanium turnbuckles, antenna mount, and rear wheels are used.

the rear bulkhead is the older style with no inboard camberlink holes.
The rear wheels are the only remaining part from my original jrx-2 which was sold off years ago. I found them in with my brothers juior-2 which I had my dad bring over last time he visited.

I'm still looking for orange 5-spoke front wheels, short front shock tower, 2 short shock bodies, and a body.

I am considering going with Purple aluminum hardware, but piecing together a screw kit looks like it is going to be overly expensive.

here is todays progress.
It's a good thing I started with a well used chassis as I don't think I could have drilled out a brand new plate for the RPM steering and battery box.
The battery box is nice but poorly thought out. It is listed on the card as for both the RC-10 and JRX-2 yet the mounting holes do not line up with either car. They could have made it so it was a direct bolt-on for one of them. It includes non-standard screws that protrude from the bottom, so I used regular 8-32 flat heads and countersunk the holes.

Looks great so far. I have the same battery strap for my worlds build. I may need to rethink my battery cup choice

So tonight I tried to mount the Robinson Racing adjustable rear toe-in setup.
What a nightmare.
First I get it lined up, drill holes and mount it, only to find that the 6-32 screws fit loosely in the mounting holes barely even making marks on the walls. 8-32 and 4mm are way too big without drilling the blocks out, so I cheat and use 4-40 with nuts as I do not have any longer 6-32 screws, and even if I did, the nut would not have enough clearance.
Next problem is that the right side hinge pin holder interferes with the RPM gear cover. so the pin holder had to be trimmed.
Then the motor plate screw hole did not line up with the chassis as the vertical part of the motor plate hit the top of the block, so the right mounting block had to be trimmed to clear the plate.
I get it all test fit and screwed together to find that the hinge pin holders extend 1/8" too far forward, the h-arms are too wide. There is no other way to mount the blocks as they just fit in the space between the transmission and the motor plate. If I move them further back the motor plate and gearbox screw holes will not line up with the holes in the chassis.
I might be able to get away with using the 5-link setup with no e-clips on the hinge pins, but that is kinda hack.
I'm glad it was a used chassis. Maybe I will just use an RPM hinge pin holder and put a sticker over the hole.

Here goes another update.
I ran into some trouble with the turnbuckles. The old lunsford ones worked ok up front but the rear was too long. I swapped out the tecnacrafts from the truck(they were a little too narrow for that anyway since I used wide arms). The tecnacrafts fit well on the car, the rear camber link is so short I had to use short RPM rod ends instead of the long ones as used up front.
I cut down and modded the Robindon toe-in system so it fits with no suspension binding.
The rear shocks were assembled from all new parts and are mounted up top with RPM mounts.
The front shocks and tower are in good shape but are used. I am still trying to locate a short tower and short standard grey shock bodies.
Please don't laugh at the front wheels.
I haven't found the losi ones yet and I am out of 3/16x5/16 flanged bearings for the AE wheels I have.
The close-up of the rear end is my favorite shot so far. 13 aftermarket/hop-up parts in 1 shot. Can you name them all?
Thanks for looking!

One day, I'll pick one of these up. That rear suspension has always interested me. Good work!

Love to see old Losi builds. Are you going for period correctness?

I spy with my little eye...

Nice jib on the resto!!

The JRX2 was actually my first "real" rc car. I had all the RPM stuff on it too!! Just picked one up off ebay, can't wait to start the build. Old Losi stuff seems way harder to find than AE.

I'm trying to be period correct, to build the buggy as I would have had it up until the pro came out. I suspect that the purple motor plate is too new, and the front wheels were no longer used by the time the JRX-2 came out. I think I have located orange front wheels, short shock tower, and shock body. Now I just need a shell.
What advice do you have on the period correct issue?
Thanks,
-Anthony
