Universals and Dogbones

Post by 1of1547 »

Ok another Noob question here. :D What is the difference in universals and dogbones. I know what dog bones are since they practically come in every car/truck currently made. But what do universals look like? Are they just a first generation of CVDs? I've did a Google search and keep coming up with pictures of dogbones or new MIP CVDs.
Thanks,

In general, yes...universals are essentially older CVDs. The cvd joints changed as they progressed. The newer one's you can replace the cvd joint and swap axles with different cvd bones, whereas the old ones were one piece. I think they were originally designed because people were losing so many dog bones.

If you are looking for a visual, just search ebay and look closely at the one that are actually for RC10s.

universals and cvd's serve the same purpose but are assembled somewhat differently. the tough one to describe is the cvd, and you have some good pictures of them. they are the new style of flexible joint because they are smoother, stronger, and rebuildable.

the universal is just like a u-joint in a full-size vehicle driveshaft.

here is a typical picture of one, courtesy of ebay.

That's what I thought they may look like. :) I sort of thought they would look like a driveshaft universal. Thanks again for your help.
