ESC Question

Post by floodx »

Just upgraded to a brushless ESC with has a brushed motor mode. I currently only have brushed motors so I am running it in brushed mode.

Problem is it just pulses the motor on full throttle - any ideas on why it is doing this? I am pretty sure it accepted the brushed mode in the settings - I did it several times to make sure it took.

What speed control are you running by chance? Might help out with figuring out your problem.

Sidewinder

Tried a couple different batteries (both lipo (2S) and nimh (6 cell))
Tried both a 15T and 19T Orion brushed motor and a old 20T I have
Also swapped out transmitter / receiver from my daughters r/c to make sure it wasn't that

my guess is it is still in brushless mode but i have been through the manual setup at least 5 times and it appears to accept the brushed mode setting but apparently not?

I now see over in the crawler forum that you have to have the castlelink dohicky to get the brushed setup to take...or do some voodoo magic with the stick? anybody had any luck with this one and a brushed setup - I don't plan to get a brushless motor for a couple months.

Other thing is that the ESC doesn't "ring" the motor like the manual says it is supposed to...

With the sidewinder I am almost 99% sure you need either the castle link, or the field programmer to have it run in the brushed mode. Also until it is in brushed mode it will not beep the motor. I use the sidewinder in my crawler, and it is such a great speed control for crawling.

So I contacted the seller to send it back and then use the extra I would spend on a castle link usb dohicky to get a different ESC. But instead Castle says they are going to send me a new one - why would they send me a new one if you had to have the link to get it into brushed mode? They obviously think that it works as the manual says.

This make sense to anybody else - it doesn't make sense to me. Plus Castle won't respond to my emails - they only will respond to the seller - go figure.

Well, Castle has a reputation of being responsive to its customers ... maybe they think that the present software should allow running in brushed mode without additional hardware.

As far as them only corresponding with the seller only, I'm not sure what this means. Who is the "seller"? Did you purchase it on eBay? I know that they provide less support when products are purchased through non-authorized dealers. I know that the most recent rebate offer was only available if devices were purchased through authorized dealers ... they specifically excluded eBay sales.

I will have to eat crow for now at least...

They sent me a sidewinder v2 - I guess they redesigned it? maybe fixed the manual trigger problem for the brushed motors.

Haven't had a chance to try it though

Update: wired it up - no go - the trigger problem is fixed but red/black to the motor doesn't work - red/white does so I am good to go now.
