The Most Totally Awesome Turbo Optima Ever

Post by ROH73 »

I picked this up as an eBay buy-it-now about 4 years ago; I think I paid around $30. I need to tear it down to get some parts off of it for another build (in particular, the aluminum bellcranks and it has a steel Thorp final pinion). Before I do that, however, I decided to take pics to document some awesome mid-80s RC artistry :D .

Features: custom front monoshock mounts, carbon fiber/some sort of fiberboard composite chassis, sheet metal skid plate/rear motor guard, adjustable chain tensioner, fully enclosed lower chain guide with completely open top chain, rear body mount/wing wire posts, carbon fiber left rear trans plate (which serves no purpose whatsoever) and hacked unknown RC10 style body.

Missing are the Delta shock on the front (which I sold) and two gold Associated shocks on the rear (which I put on another car).

It simply doesn't get any better than this  .

The chain tensioner is actually pretty cool, although the guides that the chain runs over don't spin, so there's some serious friction there.

I almost feel bad tearing it apart. I'll keep the custom parts and may rebuild a facsimile of it someday to see exactly how this thing handles.

Wow. Lot of garage work there. Props to the guy for working with what he had or could get to try and improve his car. BTW the body I think is a Proline Class 1 for the RC10.

For a moment I thought I was looking at an Optima MID...

...a thing that would explain the left carbon fiber plate, if the previous owner tried to convert his original Optima to something MID-like....

Man that thing is barely recognizable! Great price for a good stack of parts though. I love the tensioner!

Possibly. At the moment, it's basically acting as a huge washer for all the gearbox screws :D . Otherwise, it's not attached to anything else.

Yeah, I was happy with the price. And, crazy appearance aside, the parts are in decent shape.

The MIP chain drive conversion for the RC10 had something similar (perhaps someone has a pic). This one is definitely home-grown :) .
