Lipo storage (with a twist)

Post by THEYTOOKMYTHUMB »

Well, due to an extraordinary series of circumstances I charged my lipos 6 months ago in preparation for race day and they’ve sat ever since.

I know there has been a lot of talk about lipo storage so I thought I’d throw out some real life experience.

The lipos in the pic were all charged to race conditions back in early April. Lots of stuff happened and they sat in the basement unused until today. I know lipos are supposed to be stored at 60% or so, but these were stored at 100% and seemed to be just fine. I think their low C rating helped.

I plan to get back to the oval soon and I’ve wondered many times this past Summer if I would need new lipos. Too lazy to get them out and check them I let them sit. They feel and perform just fine. Another testimonial to these packs. Both Maxamps and Win-Force packs seemed to be unscathed. I ran each pack for about 5 minutes in my Slash and they all displayed big balls. True testament to the Slash and the Titan 550 which have sat all this time too. Fun afternoon all in all.

Electronics case that sat dormant for 6 months.

This was supposed to be the awesome display of power after a 6 month dormancy, but not sure you get the full effect from this photo. :D

Thankfully! With my luck all of the LiPos would have ruptured.

I was afraid they'd turn soft and gummy, but they all seemed about the same as before. :D

My first Lipo packs were Orion hard case packs. This was about 4-5 years ago, and we always left them full charged (like you sometimes for months), and they were great for about 2-3 years. They are pretty inconsistent now, but I doubt one occasion will kill them. -Jeff
