Vanquish finally built.

Post by Mad Racer »

I bought this around 3 yrs ago before the Avante re re came along thinking it will make a good runner. I never had any experiance with these cars at all so that didn't help.

It turned out to be a real bucket of junk. I have never quit on a re build but this was so close of going on the bay.

I decided to buy Avante parts once it came along to replace the bits i need. So all the front end components were purchased. New Avante shocks were purchased and all the hardwere to mount the shocks. New re re rear carbon shock tower too. New re cvd's for the front too. Re Avante sway bars & mounts for front & rear.

I than realized i need the re re rear shock tower supports so that was purchased too.

So i started to rebuild this basket case thinking this will be going together quite well. GEEEE what a huge mistake all this turned out. I got all the front end to go togeather with new adj camber links. The front had very limited travel . The rear Avante shock tower wouldn't go on due to the different chassis. The Re re shocks wouldn't bolt up either.

So i thought i will buy some 2nd hand vanquish shocks ( This Chassis has a tapper spring & small shock cups at the bottom to clear the funny shaped hub carriers) I found a set on E bay in the U.K . Advertised as Vanquish shocks i bought them. So when they arrived I knew these were Not Vanquish but other Tamiya shocks. I contacted the seller and she had no idea what they were.

I than asked on the wanted forum on the Tamiya club. I bloke responded to me and said he had a full set of Vanquish shocks for a good price. Mmmm $60 posted was NOT cheap but thought I have spent so much on it I can't give up. So i payed for them. Once they arrived i got the dampers only. No springs, No spring cups. These parts i don't have as I said the front spring cups are really small. $60 for Tamiya plastic shocks is a lot i felt so i contacted him & he posted the springs and rear spring cups only. Geeeeee

In the mean time i painted a new shell with re po decals. Bought a new tire/Wheel Combo. A new battery Door.

I also bought new alloy shock towers from Pargu 2000.

On my Hoildays for 2 weeks so thought i will give it one more try. Pulled the box out ( All in bits except the front end) Started from scratch with a view i must be able to do this. The front Avante shocks were pulled off. The New alloy Tower was bolted up. The Vanqish dampers i got were rebuilt with the Avente re re front taper springs that i bought earlier. The Tiny spring cups came of my Frog Re re shocks ( Perfect) Avante Re front sway bar was fitted up as well. The front end went together better 3rd time. Has the new gold Avanti re re Hub carriers with Avante re re cvd's. A lot better shock travel now.

The rear got the original shock tower put back on with the new CVA rear shocks with Avante re re springs. The next problem was the wing mount as this lemon had no wing. I tried the Re Re avante but didn't fit up so after a little head scratching i came across a Top Force Wing Wire with a spare wing mount from my Top Force spare Bin. Home made shock tower wing mounts went on & this finished it off.

New body went on along with the new wheels.

So Glad this is ttogether after close to 3 yrs of it in parts. I will install electrics soon to run her.

Sorry to carry on but this has to be toughest Tamiya i have ever restored and most likely the most expensive restro i have ever done!!!!!!!!

Maybe those other shocks were from the sonic-fighter?
I hope it runs as well as it looks after all the work you put in. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Wow, that is quite a story Mark! You must have spares to build at least another one, if not two cars.

At least the cost is amortized over a few years which softens the pain a bit. Very nice joob on the resto and interesting write up.
