Losi XX4 parts availability

Post by jamin »

I am trying to talk myself out of doing a XX4 build, just wondered what your guys thoughts were on parts availability are for the XX4?

I thought about buying a 2nd car and replacing worn out parts, but due to my 'fussy' nature I think i might be better off just buying the parts seperately. I've seen some stuff on ebay, I am just not sure about commiting to spending another £200-£300 on another Losi. Although this would complete my line up of 'XX' series cars - have I just talked myself into it!?

Saying that though, this car holds a special place for me as it was with this car that I made my only ever national 'A' final here in the UK, even though overall I was alot better at 2WD.

Also, does anyone know if the bodyshell is still available?

Thanks in advance!

Shells shouldn't be an issue to source. Overall parts availability is still okayish but there's a few things that are becoming crazy hard to source, like front belts for instance... if you run yours I'd buy a spare car. For the shelf, you can always find new parts if you're patient and rich enough ;)

XX4 is one of the coolest cars ever... so revolutionary and hi-perf it still is TLR's car of choice for rutted tracks!

Thanks Paul, just trying to make my mind up, I dont really need another project, but a XX4 would be nice to have in my possession, even if its just a case of collecting all the parts, then building it up in the years to come...

Do it!!! 8)

I really like the XX4 - i've never raced 4wd off road, but remember driving my mate's XX4 & thinking just how easy it was to drive the absolute door handles off the thing, back then of course, cells were much more marginal for lasting the 5min race duration, & the 3-belt drivetrain was probably the car's only dissadvantage, but the car's handling made up for that. I can see why its still held in such high regard & would be even better now with LiPo batteries & brushless motors!

My only ownership of this chassis is in its on-road guise as the Street Weapon..... was certainly better as the Off Roader it was originally intended to be.

P.S; Ben, It would be worth keeping an eye out for a complete low-run time car there must be a fair few out there as they were very popular & been in production for so long (especially with the re-release)

Good point... if you get into XX4 then you MUST have a SW... both the "normal" and the IWC version :D

I agree about the TC version, but, correct me if I am wrong, but didnt the SW win the first ever official ISTC?

Edit: Yep, it was driven by good old David Spashett!

Yep... IWC :) Not an IFMAR race at the time, so not an "official" world championship.

I had two IWC SW and I have fond memories of them... if you could make runtime that car was a winner. I remember talking with Spashett himself at a big race once and asking him what he thought about the XXX-S and he said "They should have kept the SW's suspension geometry instead" Which is weird as the SW was basically an onroad hack of the xx4, whereas the XXXS was a properly design sedan that actually yielded the XXX4 later (with not much success even though it actually won the worlds with MF... kinda like a B2 actually  )

Its also kinda weird that the JRXS shares more similarities with the SW than the XXX-S. Ok so the battery is down the middle, but the motor is in the same place and had smaller wishbones...

I've been lucky enough to drive all the Losi TC's, but the JRXS was my favourite - Dan will know why, I got that thing on rails in 2006 :D

HELL YES!

I'm going to do a Worlds Edition XX4 build from just buying all the parts new, from eBay and a few other places.
I already have an early XX4,and like you,a W.E. would complete my XX collection-apart from a Street Weapon, everytime one comes up for sale, they refuse to ship outside of the USA...I'm beginning to think that car and me are jinxed.

I am sure there are some guys from the states on here that would help you out and get one shipped over to you...

Ok so I've ordered a chassis & cover set from Horizon here in the UK, be interesting to see if a chassis arrives, if it does then its game on :D !

Still trying to decide if I should buy a roller for ancillary parts, its gonna start to get expensive then.

Ooop, what have we done

On the subject of the ISTC events - the 98 event in Southshields seems to have been recognised by IFMAR (if you believe Wiki) But the event I attended was the ISTC at Alexandra Palace, London (in presumably 97?) - or was that something else altogether?
