Academy Wyvern update: build started and parts pile
Update: I've started building this car 2 weeks ago and gotten pretty far already.
It's turned out to be a pretty neat car which resembles the 94 YZ10 but with some better, and some lesser, features.
And then I stumbled over this spare (WY part nrs) and option (WT part nrs) lot:
I guess I'll be stuck with lots of parts I'll never use and won't ever be able to sell. But just looking at the options parts, together with the generic parts; it's a hell of a good deal anyway.

Re: Academy Wyvern, 8/2012 update: build started and parts p
No paint yet, no pics either: I took the kit along on a business trip and built it in a poorly lit hotel room.
I guess I'll have to do a little rebuild when those option parts arrive. I'll make pics then.
You mentioned you had several yourself: how did you fare with them? Any advise, or tips?
Do you ave the SP01 version also? I'd like like to replace the molded upperdeck of the SP02 with the a flat piece as on the SP01.
The moter mount which I thought to be plastic turned out to be blackened metal. Not real pretty or well done, but much better than plastic for a runner

Re: Academy Wyvern, 27 Aug 2012 update: body painted
Painted the body yesterday while waiting for the option parts to arrive.
I think I succeeded making it look less flat. Some of the details in the shape were sacrificed to give it simpler and stronger lines.
The only thing I regret was not having something on hand better than this dull blue for the backdrop.
The lexan on this body does not feel so strong, so I may have to try and fit something else on after a couple races; no spare bodies on the long list

Wow! That is a Yokomo inspired shell if I've ever seen one!

Re: Academy Wyvern, 27 Aug 2012 update: body painted
The yokomo shell was inspired by the manga spaceships, like many Tamiya and other Japanese shells: Nichimo and Marui for example.
And I really don't mind the resemblance: I always liked that particular yokomo shell from the start.
You'll see more resemblance with the 94 works when I take those built pics. But again, they could have taken much worse for inspiratio. And there's a couple differences that really are an improvement too. All in all a pretty well thought over car.
Pitty nobody has any info on how they did in the korean or other competition.

You did good on the shell - nice result.
Judging by the looks of mine, it´s a "difficult" body to paint
Regarding the tips and tricks, I have no clue. I´ve only ran one of the two (both SP01´s), and only once.

Re: Academy Wyvern, 27 Aug 2012 update: body painted
Thanks Dennis.
You're right; I spent 2 evenings drawing and erasing motifs on the protective film.
The designer did a pretty good job putting in nice details, but he completely forgot about people wanting to do more than a window outline and single color.
That, and the fact I only ever user use tape and spray cans, made it a pretty big challenge. Just look at the box art and you see how wrong it can go
Maybe we can swap some parts so we both have both versions
I hope you didn't just drive it once because it broke down (insert nail-biting smiley)

I'v been away from my hobby for a while. and got 2 messages from the members today. thanks for not forgetting me.
as everyone can see. the car Wyvern came from Yoke's design. Eric met a guy from Academy at a race in Japan. and the guy designed this car as well as current models like SBV2 and GV2. there were 2 designers when Academy made this Wyvern. and only one of them, who is the guy Eric met in Japan is dong the job. actually copy and modification
I could be wrong. but I think I saw this car at '97ish at the first time. and it sold well here just because it was very cheap.
Erik, you can see some more pics from this google search result.

Re: Academy Wyvern, 27 Aug 2012 update: body painted
I guess I'm one of Academy's biggest vintage fan in Europe
My parts arrived today: 3boxes taped together over 15kilo in total
I already started the "spare" car. Just a couple parts are misssing, otherwise there's enough to build half a dozen Wyverns and still have spare parts for all.
As promised I'm taking pics of the build, so prepare for a loooong post soon.

That looks like something I may have to copy, thanks Hyeong for the image links

Re: Academy Wyvern, 27 Aug 2012 update: body painted
I was wondering wich body is on the yellow one.
At the moment I have only one body and it feels more like PET than Lexan. So I don't think it will last for long.

I am pretty sure the bodies are (closes to furthest) V2, V1, V2, V1 by looking at the scoops and size of the side window.
V1
V2
V1
V2
