6 gear top shaft nut 5-40???

I finished the rebuild of my RC10 A stamp and the final piece of annoyance has been the top shaft nut clamping nut. The threads on my original are all boogered up so I seach for one on flea bay. I get one that the sell claims he threaded a nut on before he sent it. I can't get what I assume is the correct nut, a 4-40, to thread on the shaft. The threads do not look perfect but do look useable. After firiing off a nasty-gram the seller politely tells me the nut is something odd-ball like 5-40. Is this true??? Why would this shaft be such a crazy thread, and where do I find the nut?
