I would consider an Associated/Reedy combo out of a new RTR - they are available on eBay for under $100, easy to set up, and keep the brand nostalgia for a vintage RC10 (Team Associated).
Here is one example, there are many more:
Associated SC-700BL and Reedy 540R

Also consider the Novak Club Sensored Brushless System 17.5T, this is one-touch set up (super easy), and has ultra smooth, sensored power which is perfect for a vintage R/C (I have one in a JRX-2).
The speed control is very small, the whole system fits easily in an RC10, the only down side for bashing is no reverse (Forward/Brake only)
Available through Tower for $119, minus a $10 coupon this month, so $109 (free shipping):
Novak Club 17.5T

My 7 year old runs a Novak Havoc Pro and 13.5 combo without fail, although I've heard of reliability issues from other owners. We have a 3300kv/SC700 lrp set that is good too-

yes. radio system doesn't matter. Even if you are on a budget though there are 2.4 systems out there for $25-$40 shipped. Good investment unless you are the only rc car within many miles...then it don't matter to much.

So with the brushless system and my am radio I can't have another person with a different channel am radio?
Because I have 2 rc10 that work just changing one to brushless lipo. I was gonna use the brushless one while my gf used the brushed. Both have am radios with different channels

that will work just fine with different channel am radios. Going brushless won't affect anything like that.

There have been reports of problems with things like that but I'm running a few different brands of BL systems with AM radios without any issues. Got most of mine transferred over to 2.4 but there is the occasional runner I don't have a 2.4 rx for that I still run with AM or FM radios...
