the few rc10's and jrx2's that ran in classics and not in 2wd had stock rubber. now stock rubber between the jrx2 and rc10 are vastly different.
jrx2's came with "naturals" which are like modern tires, whereas the rc10 had those hard lugs on there.

at the end of the day it's about having fun. bring what ya got and race!
You bring up an excellent point. The one thing that the organizers believe will level the playing field between a race-bred designed car like the RC10 and the plastic fantastic cars is the stock rubber requirement but that may not play as much of a role with a JRX2 and it's "natural" rubber. Do you think the JRX2's have an advantage in classic class because of that? How have they done with these tires in the past? I'll certainly be interested to see how the two types measure up.

I totally agree with you. The Vonats are not the IFMAR worlds. I'll be there to have fun and fulfill a 25+ year dream of racing an r/c buggy in an organized event (and make it to the end without destroying my car) so I'll still be running my original 25+ year old (modded! :) Wild One against whatever else enters. Can't wait!!

the fact that the plastic fantastic's seem to win the classics class should answer that.
the jrx2 did ok but i think the top 3 were tamiya's on modern rubber.

Then I will try to change that with my 30 year old Tomahawk...

i think this needs to be added the classic rules like in the 2011 thread:

and older "race" buggies (original RC10, Ultima, Scorpion, Astute, etc). Race buggies must be run in original configuration (tranny, suspension, original size tires.

and by original size tires i do believe that meant "kit" type tires.

i was down in the r/c dungeon and i got to thinking, with the talk of the losi "natural" tires, the rc10 probably isn't the best choice for that class. that may change with the re-release since i believe the tires are supposed to be softer. but i was thinking...... there's no reason you couldn't run a tq10. 2.1 fronts, 2.0 rears, still a short arm rc10. the tq-76 and tq-20's are far better tires that those of the gold tub, and the tq-20's came in 3 different compounds.

Erich told me that periodic hop-ups and and modern tires was allowed on my Kyosho Tomahawk from 83

Ok...a little confused again...

So I'm reading here that non-plastic cars can run in Classic, provided they use the original, smaller rims and tires. Plastic fantastics can, however, use modern tires. Here are three Tamiya examples...I just want to make sure my understanding is correct here.

1.) Manta Ray/Dirt Thrasher/Blazing Star/TA02 with Manta Ray arms, etc. can use modern 2.2" rims and tires. So, 4wd plastic with modern rims and tires.

2.) Astute must use original, smaller rims with the harder tires. Must they be the kit tires, or can they generically be era-specific tires of the harder compound from that time? (2wd non-plastic with stock rims and tires).

3.) Avante (4wd non-plastic) or Avante-like (Avante 2001, Egress, etc.) must use stock rims/tires. OR...is this type of chassis too extreme for Classic regardless of the rim/tire restriction?

Cool, so I guess that means the re-re RC10 will be allowed in classic class. Good to know in the event I get the urge to run it instead of my Wild One. Something tells me the class could see more RC10's this year given the re-release coming out with softer tires and an updated/lipo-capable chassis (according to reports). I agree with the rule addition which provides necessary clarification since race-bred cars are allowed to run against the plastic fantastics. Nothing should be left up to personal interpretation or there's bound to be an unfair advantage somewhere given the disparity between the two. It should be clear that original configuration means EVERY component of the car (Chassis, suspension, tranny, steering, suspension arms, rims/tires etc - name a part, it needs to be original) except Lipo, electronics and bearings, IMHO. Speaking of re-re's, are all re-re's of pre-1994 cars (Super HotShot, etc) allowed in classic class?

Carefull, I think SCR8P would be the first to admit he's not the race director (until 2014 when the race is in his yard  ).

I'm just a west coast observer, but I'm sure you should wait unil after August to see what re res are allowed and where.

Keep the fun #1. (As much as I'd be tempted to build a if you aint cheatin' you aint tryin' short armed 6 gear that you'd have to take completely apart in tech inspection  )

Ah, good to know I'm not actually talking to the organizers. I'll definitely have to wait to see what's allowed but what car to run is becoming a more difficult decision as I learn more about this event so I have to reconsider...I guess that's part of the fun! Keeping the fun #1 is always top priority for me but not at the expense of fairness which should be a very close second. Unfortunately, knowing human nature tells me the "you aint cheatin' you aint tryin'" temptation is invariably shared by some who will end up treating the Vonats like the IFMAR worlds and go to no end to gain an advantage and the re-re RC10's timely mid-August release date gives them a perfect opportunity and platform to do so. That's why some strategy has to be involved in what car to run.

hey all, wondering if i should even consider entrance in stadium truck, due to the fact my rc10t has a t2 gear box and rear bulkhead/tower, but its built to an A stamp gold pan with a lil dremel work, does this out year me by using 1995 parts... my only reason was to keep it going with more available GT parts, outdrives and diff gear in particular... would be fun to beat on it in a matched race setting... if rpm boxes are legal, could it count to my home brew final drive of 2.61 to be fair?... id really like to take the time out to come, and be legal to run what i already have...

lol, well past vonats racers are gonna have to be good for you guys until the "race director" gets married and decides to grace us with his presence. (just kidding erich!)

seriously though, we've hashed about the rules for years. i'm pretty sure i can answer 95% of all your questions.

sbcnyc, that's a tough one. at the end of the day we're out here to have fun. i personally don't see an issue with your configuration, i doubt anyone else will either.
maybe a question like that should wait for erich.
